Linking my Digital Camera to P.C.

Post by Ricko »

My camera Olympus X-915 is not recognised by my computer via the USB lead supplied.
Running XP everything else recognises ok when connected to a port and there is not a conflict showing.
Am I missing something obvious as I have tried all I know without joy, please help if you can.

Not familiar with the Olympus but lets have a look.

Has it been recognised in the past?

If it has been recognised before, last time you used it connected to the computer did you use the 'Safely Remove Hardware' or just unplug it?
Have you installed or changed any programs recently?

When the camera is plugged into the PC is it showing in My Computers?

I had someone recently who was not setting the camera settings to 'PC' on the small screen so the camera did not 'talk' to the computer. Wasn't an Olympus and I am not imtimating that you are doing it wrong, but go through the manual and slowly carryout the instructions and check each action and what the screen and computer indicate.

If it worked fine before, try a system restore to about the last time it worked. Remember any installs or updates after that time will have to be done again.

Is your USB port working correctly, check the device manager for an yellow exclamation mark

Is the camera turned on?

In mycomputer do you see a new drive? Press F5 to refresh the list.

It should be plug an play but you would have got an installation software CD with the camera. Did you install that. Normally you don't need it and it just installs crap on you PC but you could try it to see if it helps

Dave M. Not been recognised on the PC at all and yes I always use the safely remove with any plug in.
The only change I have made recently in to swap printers.
Not showing in My Computers, when connecting through USB the camera automatically switches on to PC menu to print.

DIY Johnny. No yellow exclamation marks show in Device Manager.
Camera switches on see above answers.

Foggy. Yes it uses SD or Micro SD cards. I have a card reader but with the Micro SD card in the SD adapter it won't fit into the SD slot in the reader!
("Where do I Live in Lincolnshire"- Grimsby the place that used to have a football team worth watching!)

Thanks for your replies so far guys,
Might have to invest in card reader that the adapter will fit eh?

Eliminate.
The camera switches to PC menu so it knows it is connected.
The computer does not recognise it at all.
USB ports are working
So it could be a damaged lead with, say, one wire broken.
Try another camera lead before laying out money for a card reader.

Do the pictures replay onto the camera screen?
As you are using a micro SD card it might also be a dodgey contact in the card holder.
"the X-915 takes either xD or Micro SD cards"
Try an xD card which will have direct contact with the camera as opposed to having contact with a card holder.

Rick,
Looks like it is narrowed down to you computer USB ports not liking your camera.

Check out what Microsoft suggest in this link:

Rick,
It would be worth trying one of the rear USB ports because while all modern PCs use USB 2.0 for rear and front panel usb ports keep in mind that the rear ports are directly on the mother board and the front pannel ports are connected via a cable to a hub, usually seperately located from the usb controller on the board. So on a store bought pc the front panel ports are always slightly slower.
Also, what state of charge are the camera batteries in?
If the camera is trying to use USB power it may be struggling at the front ports.

 Still no joy with this plug in usb camera, tried the wifes camera in the front two ports and it works in either one!!!!!!!!!
Then I tried my camera in both and not recognised?
Tried my camera into my coal fired laptop running xp, and usb 1 ports.........It recognised it straight away informing me that it may run slower due to the usb 1, everything works fine.
So whats wrong with the usb ports on my tower system, remember that other plug and play gear will work in all ports but not my new camera, yet xp is being used on P.C. and laptop.
Tried all I know and have been advised yet still no joy, need the P.C. to run it as the software is too much for the laptop!
No explanation marks show and it has worked on the system before.
Help Rick.

This is a long shot, but I'm wondering if your computer is detecting the camera, but isn't assigning a drive letter. This assumes that when you plug your camera into a computer it would normally show up as a drive, e.g. D: Try the following steps:
Plug the camera into the computer and turn on in the normal way.
Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
In the console tree on the left click Disk Management.
In the right hand side of the window all the drives on your computer will be displayed. Can you see a drive with the capacity of the memory card in your camera?
