1956 Minor

Post by Simon Site Manager »

Hi Guys,

My 1956 850cc spilt screen keeps eating condensors, voltage is with-in parameters, does a condensor every 200 miles or so. Any Ideas?

Thanks,
Simon

From my days with old cars this reminded me of a problem caused by a duff ballast resistor. I found this link which might save me from trying to explain it badly

I would be supprised the car has a ballast resistor. Coil would be the thing to check also the points should be connected to -ve for neg earth and +ve for pos earth.

Thanks James,
Will check that out, replaced condensor today, did about 40 miles or so and is running like a dream, I have also bought a spare condensor too.

hi, dont know if your problem is fixed or not but worth mentioning that the voltage regulators can go faulty intermitantly ive seen 12v ones putting out up to 16v when revving which will fry a condensor and points but sometimes on idle you can test them and only get 12v.if your problem is still there wire up a volt meter and check your voltage over a period.if its a 12v system it shouldnt go above 13.8 to 14.2v

Could have been 2 faulty condensers, one fitted seems fine. But thanks Michelangelo, I will do a regulator check.

Thanks guys!
