what is a 'gateway connection'?
ive just had some 'dongle problems'..
first it told me the zoom usb wireless adapter wasnt recognised, had malfunctioned and windows didntrecognise it...?
so i pu the disc in with it gone and reinstalled it...
put it back in and for a little while it wouldnt recognise it, then it did..
now i discover ive got TWO little 'monitor' icons in the bar near the time, one is connected to the wireless network, running at 56mbs the one i thought i was using..
the other is shown as a 'gateway' connection and is running at 100mbs..
i opened its properties and its got all this..
libtorrent/0.14.1.0
and limeTCP7E5C4E7DB7 and another one similar...
now the youngun has this limewire thing and ive been having a few other probs lately like its takin 10 minutes to boot, just sort of hanging for a while after the desktop loads then it works...
and i found a few trojans on it, 1 with a level of 4 out of 5 threat (spyware terminator) but i thought i'd got rid...
is there something a bit dodgy goin on here? ive never had 2 connections open at once before??

All my advice should be taken with a rather large pinch of salt, all the gear, absolutely no idea whatsoever ;)

Firstly you need to disable the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) in the Services Manager.
Start -> Run -> type services.msc in the box and click OK.
Scroll down the list to Internet Connection Sharing and double click it.
If it is shown as Started, click STOP.
Then set it's startup type to Disabled. Click Apply -> OK.
That will have sorted that out.
See how your conenction is now, if OK then fine, but if still having problems but connected to the internet, download Ccleaner but do not run it yet.
Uninstall your wireless adaptor and then run Ccleaner to shift any traces.
Reboot and do a fresh install of the adaptor.
If it gives you the option of letting Zoom or Microsoft control it's operation, choose Microsoft. You may not get this, I know that some Netgear Adaptors do, so thought I should mention it.
Check how your connection is and post back.

oooer..... went down the list and theres no 'internet connection sharing'...
there is a 'application layer gateway service' and its started..
theres also 'network connections'.... would this govern every connection though?
and theres network location awareness.. again started...

The ALG service indicates that you have windows XP, so do you have windows Firewall working or do you have another Firewall?
If only Windows then you need the ALG at times.
The Network Connections service is what is connecting you to the router for your internet connection, so that is fine. It is probably set to Manual startup and runs when you click on your browser icon to open it.
Right click on each of the monitor icons and see what options they give you. It should be something like Open Network Connections Window.
Post back about your firewall and also what the right click menus say.

Edit, just read your last post. The message about a network cable being unplugged is nothing to worry about. It is you network card which has nothing to do because you are conneting wirelessly and not through a network cable.
Just let us know about your OS (is it XP) and firewall.

yeh its xp dave..
the icon with two monitors gives me disable, status, change windows firewall and open network connections...
the one with one monitor and the 3 little 'radio signal' lines gives me all the above + view available wireless networks...
i just disabled the first one and it stopped me refreshing anything? so i reenabled it and the connection works fine again..

k, the firewall is windows, switched on, the limewrie application is unchecked as an exception...
i tried disabling the gateway, it wouldnt let me...
i tried repairing the connection on the wireless, it disabled it, re-enabled it and the gateway connection completely disappeared..
but when i tried to log onto any site, this one mainly it just gave me a dns error - cannot find etc...
so, luckily, i still had a screen up that showed the gateway connection, as disabled? i re-enabled it and managed to get back online immediatley...
now, the wireless monitor thing is downloading and uploading at a silly rate of knots but i cant see why? ive shut everything down that i can think of?

All this seems to have started playing up very recently according to your posts.
Do you have Windows Update set at Auto?
Do you know if you got some updates yesterday or today?
Try a system restore to a couple of days ago, or at least to after you got rid of those trojans.

this is weird beyond belief...
i did all the uninstall, cclean, reinstall, took 3 goes to clean the registry, wiped any trojans all that gone...
got it up and running, tried answering your post, finished typing and it wouldnt let me on...
the gateway thing just pops up on its own 30 seconds after connection established...
then the next thing is it gives me errors saying it cant understand the device, disconnect and reconnet and if it doesnt work replace the device...
so i uninstall and reinstall the device and it works... after 2 goes...
its working now, for how long?
could the dongle be about to go pop?
scared to do a sytem restore cos ive deleted 8 trojans now over 2 days... should i go back a week and see what happens then?
