tiling above a window

Post by stofts »

Hi

I can't figure out a way or tiling above a window.

The piece I am talking about is the vertical wall above the window and below the ceiling - not the "ceiling"/horizontal part of the window recess.

My problem is: how to keep the tiles from slipping down the wall. I could put a baton straddling the window but I don't think I have ever seen anything like that in the DIY books.

Is there a better way of doing this?

thanks
I couldn't do this stuff without your help.

nope i usually use an offcut of floorboard in the reveal with a slight protusion then wedge that in place with a vertical 2x4 then let the tiles rest on that! :thumbright: of course you have to forward plan your layout or you could end up with iffy groutlines! ::b
IF IT WERE EASY ITD B BORING!

This is what I did for both under hang, and the row on the wall.

I started out with nothing, I still have most of it.

Hi Mooncat

Thanks for the picture. I appreciate it.

How did you modify this set up for the tiles on the wall above the window?

Did you take a wider piece of wood and make it stick out a bit beyond the recess then prop it as you have done in the picture?

Yes. Using two struts makes it easier to adjust the tightness, and fastening the pieces with screws helps a lot when working on your own. The joints worked out exactly at the top of the window, not that it mattered here as the corner is now hidden behind a roller blind.
