You are better off with a proper multi meter, they are only a few quid now.
You are not supposed to probe wiring on some vehicles now, but I did it on my merc vito van when I fitted the alarm no problem
When you get a multi meter the probes will be blunt, so I sharpened the red one on the grinder.
Switch the multimeter to DC volts and connect the black lead to the car body, so that it is earthed and then you can probe the wires individually
If the multimeter probe is really sharp you only make a tiny pin prick through the insulation, which you can tape over with some insulation tape.

Cant you tell by looking at the inside of the light cluster?
Have you got the vehicle specific kit?

cheers guys.
Light cluster would be obvious choice and believe me i wish it was the case. The wire run into a terminal on the bulb holder and then power id distributed via a metal matrix. I tried everything trust me.
Got haynes manual now which has wiring diagrams, if only the colours were what the book says.
Anyway she's hooked up and working now so thanks for comments.
