i've just moved into a new rented place and want to have a landline. i know there has been one in the past because there is a phone cable coming down the wall next to the front door. it's been cut at about head height though and all the wires after it have been removed. i've wired in a new master box in the house and got back to the cut wire but my colours don't match what are in the old wire.
i've got the standard orange - orange/white
blue - blue/white
the existing has orange, white, green, black, and 3 red wires.
which should i connect? or do i have to fork out for bt to do what may be a 5 minute job?

Firstly, it IS a BT job and connecting up to the drop wires could lead to trouble from BT IF they find out.
As it is cut, then it will be disconnected at the exchange, so even trying to bodge up a connection up the wall will not get you a working phone line.
You will have to contact BT to ask to be connected and they will then come round and rewire from the last pole to a new Master Socket inside your house.
Looks like you will have top find the connection charges no matter what you try to do yourself, so let them come and do it properly.
