Hoping you can help.

We presently have a york stone kitchen floor and are thinking of having them removed and tiling it. What would we need to do to the floor in preperation for the tiling to be done. Underneath it just has hardcore.

take the oppurtunity to insulate the floor whilst your at it! dig down 200mm lay a DPM then add 100mm kingspan then 100mm screed,dont forget 25mm kingspan upstands around the perimeter before you screed. after youve screeded you wait a month or so youll be ready to tile!

Sounds like you have an old cottage with flags, to me.

is it not a listed building?

Yes, the house was built in 1840 but is not listed. We had york flags in the lounge and kitchen, we took the lounge ones up and replaced the floor. We left the kitchen ones in, but now have a toddler and think it would be better to tile the floor.
Would love any advice

nah you could just pour some concrete over the hardcore then tile straight onto it the following day

Can't see any advantage to tiling the floor because you have a toddler. Both are hard surfaces but tiles will obviously have a greater slip hazard than flags!

If you are adamant about doing it then I would go with earlier suggestion. Only other alternative option is excavating and installing a raised timber floor.

We have wanted to keep the york flags, we even relaid them last year. But they have not been grouted (not sure I am using the correct term) in between properly and bits come out. We dont know how to do it properly. Also they always look very dirty. Advice would be great on the flags if you have any.

If they are dirty then you can clean them up and then re-seal them with a stone sealer.

After cleaning, 'grout' them. I will use your term as you know what you need to do for that. Then seal them.

Not sure on the cleaning of them. Must be info on the net. I know you can get cleaning agents for them and also sure you can use a vax also.

You get sealants for stone floors. So I dare say you could say in principle it is like varnish but obviously isn't varnish. same principle though.

Don't whack ronseal varnish on the floor lol.

Fired Earth do some good sealers for stone floors. probably be www.firedearth.co.uk

they may well have info on cleaning too.
