Jointing wood

I need to but join some wood together, I intend gluing it and then I am going to use nail plates at each side, it is only for a small shed roof!

I have never used nail plates before, do you just nail through them and put one on each side of the timber?

They have not arrived et but seem to have lots of holes, do I need to put a nail in each hole or can I skip a few?

You don't need to nail through every hole..

dont nail every hole, you are driving lots of wedges into a small piece of wood, nailing evey hole will split the wood

just look at how split a door lining is after a diyer has put in the screws into a 4 or 6 inch hinge, especially if they are 5 or 6mm screws, there is a reason for pre drilling

i hear some people cry "what about gang nail trusses they dont split the wood and they have dozens of nails"

they arnt nails, its the design that prevents splitting
