My email opened instantly but that is on a Canadian server.

What is slow, his browser opening up to Yahoo or is it his email that is slow to load?

Clear out his temp files when you go.

Use Ccleaner if he has it installed or use ATF Cleaner, it is free and you do not have to install it. Download and instructions here (Windows XP, 2K, 2003 & Vista ONLY)
* NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, click No at the prompt.

Put a space between the : and the 3, or use - instead of :

½ past 6 would do.

Dave, in the start up there's a load of sfuff running we don't want, how do we sort them out.

Also there's xp anti virus running, Mcafee security scan (firewall) and AVG.

You can use the Tools -> Startup section of CCleaner to disable any startup items. If you have any problems, you can re-enable them from the same place in CCleaner. I would recommend using one anti virus program. I'm not sure what you mean by XP anti virus, but check this page to make sure it's not malware http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-r ... -2008-2009 I would only run one anti virus package with real-time protection, so even if "xp anti virus" is not malware I'd uninstall it and stick with AVG.

It's difficult to say what speed you should get as there are lots of variables involved, e.g. distance from the exchange and the quality of your phone line. Interesting about the xp anti virus, I'll take it off next time I go over.

once the computer has loaded it doesn't seem too bad now, but that takes forever, there's perhaps 50 progs in the start-up which items can I safely dis-able.

XP Antivirus IS Malware and should be removed post haste.

I am trying to get shut of it on Weegies computer but its own self defence is stopping MalwareBytes (MBAM) from installing.

This is what I have just PMed to Weegie and it should help you with your mates computer.
It would be worth you downloading MBAM on your computer and dragging the MBAM.exe to a memory stick to take over there.

If you can download and save to the Desktop, then do that.
Next we have two options to go at.

1. Firstly reboot into Safe Mode.

Shut down the computer and after it is shut down, press the start button and as soon as it starts to boot up keep tapping the F8 key on the keyboard. There is only a very short time that this action will work so keep tapping the key, if it boots into normal mode, repeat the shutdown and try again.
Once in Safe Mode a black screen will appear and you can use the up and down arrows on teh keyboard to highlite and select Safe Mode, then press Enter key and it will boot into Safe Mode. Don't worry about the look of the icons and screen, just double click the download icon for MBAM and select Run.
Follow the instructions in the link I gave you in the last post. If the other computer is close by, open that link to be able to follow it. If not, I will send the instructions in another PM so that you can print them off before starting.

Call it anything, (UHM.exe) will do.
Then double click the icon and try to run it.



If you are unable to even download on that computer, let's get the download on the other computer.
I take it that you are using another computer to access the internet.
Do you have a USB memory stick?

Download the MBAM installer onto the non-infected computer and save to Desktop.
Right click the icon and rename it UHM.exe
Then plug in the memory stick
Go to My Computer and double click the icon for the USB Stick.
If it fills the screen then click the button next to the redbutton with the cross in it, to resize the window down.
You can move the window around by left clicking the top name bar of the window and draging it around, move it so that yopu can see the UHM.exe icon on the screen.
Then left click and hold the icon and drag it to the USB Memory stick window.
This will copy the installer to the stick.

Click the 'Safely Remove' icon near the clock and click the usb Stick in the list, when safe to remove, unplug it.

Plug the stick into the infected computer, and the window should open on the screen, if it does not show, go to My Computer and double click the icon for the USB Stick.
When it opens, double click the UHM.exe icon and click Run.
That should install the MBAM,
Then follow the instructions in the link I gave before.

Sorry if it seems a bit long winded but the infection is programmed to kill any program that might kill it. Sort of self preservation of the baddies. BUT it only knows the names of the programs and not the name you have given it. So it should not stop UHM.exe from running.

Regading the items running at Startup:
As stated above download & installCcleaner.
WATCH when installing, select CUSTOM INSTALL because the Yahoo Toolbar installer is ticked by default, just untick it.

Click Check for updates (bottom right)

When ready, Open Ccleaner -> Tools -> Startup.
Make a list of every item in that list and check any that you don't know with Sysinfo.org:

All you should really have is your security software and, if wireless, you wireless adaptor.

I have three items in my startup list:
Comodo Internet security
Realtek audio
and Winpatrol System monitor.

As for the speed, clear out all the temp files in the browser by using Ccleaner in Cleaner mode, and make sure the browser is the latest version.

I ran the ATF cleaner and cleared out the cookies etc from the temp, and the computer did speed up considerably.

I did see the xp anti virus when I was poking around, and got the virus not on warning at boot, also got a disc unstable message when I re-booted once.

I have a small remote drive can I use that to stick the downloads on, if so I could just paste them from my computer.

The computer with the problem is still works, but morbid when you boot up, first time was about 12-15mins

Sorry about the link. There is a full stop at the end of it that shouldn't be there. This is the correct one:

You cannot copy and paste a setup file to another drive, you would only get the icon. You have to drag the icon across to the HD from where you have saved it, OR plug the HDD in and note what drive letter it has, then right click the icon for the setup.exe and select Send To and click on the drive letter for your ext HD.

Depending upon your browser you may be able to select it Saves the download to your ext HD before downloading but that means changing browser settings and then reverting back afterwards. Not what I would do.

When you get round to using SysInfo, just type any names that you are not sure of into the search box just above the box with all the blue numbers in.
