Sorry about the noobish nature of these questions. I'm just getting my head around a bathroom refit where i have to rip everything (including the floorboards) so I'm just back to walls, joists and pipes, and would appreciate some help to enable me to tackle things in the right order.

I'm OK with tiling and plumbing from working on my kitchen and various small scale DIY for family, but I'm looking at the bathroom suite and it's got me boggled. Most of the stuff I've read hasn't started from the "totally back to the plaster" scenario I'm in.

Couple of tiling questions.

[1] Do I secure the bath to the bare plaster wall, and then tile up from it toward the ceiling, then seal. Or do I tile the wall to below the bath rim height and go from there. I'm guessing it's got to be the former! (Probably obvious once you've fitted one!).

[2] Same deal with the wash basin. I'm going to be starting with floorboards and a plaster wall. I'm guessing I fit the basin to the plaster wall and then tile around it. No hang on, most of the weight is carried by the pedestal right, so it's not like it's hanging off the wall, maybe you can attach it to a tiled wall. Gah!

Hi to uhm, personally, I would fit the bath.,tile to the bath rim, but the washbasin tile behind where it's to go, (though not down to the floor....)you won't see that bit...unless you are vertically challenged others may have a different opinion..

Pipework and any cables run to correct positions.

Plaster walls.............Tank inside shower

Fit bath

Tile walls and floor

Fit lav/basin/towel rail

uhoh personally i do em this order
1 first fix plumbing.
2 floor boards in
3 plaster walls
4 bath in
5 tile walls leaving the very bottom course off
6 tile floor
7 tile last course on walls
8 install basin and W/C
9 grout
10 silicone sealant

thats in an easy to write form but thats the basic order! obviously the firstfix plumbing has to take into account the thickness of tiles and such!

Just to add, I have done a bathroom refit last year and as a novice I was a bit baffled too!.

To add to the lads above I would just point out that ...

I think its good to use an undertile bath sealer.I think they are a good idea. You can get flexible ones like Trimlux, seallux / homelux or whatever the names are called

Don't assume walls are straight, plumb level etc, i.e. don't start with a full tile in the corner

Test pipework if under the floor before you tile. Worth hiring a pressure test guage for a morning. I found a serious leak that way (seal on push fit was screwed!)

Above all, think, rethink and think again. Its simple to these yobbos here but as a novice you can make silly mistakes.

The wash-hand basin that hangs off the wall has a frame of sorts I think. I hate them anyway.

Do one step at a tiome and ask questions along the way. Photos are immensley helpful for descibing your problem and or the pros to help!

If you like a spot of DIY it should be ok to do. I had the same situation, back to unplastered walls and floor removed completely.

Made some silly mistakes which I regret in tiling & layout but more that happy to pass on my experience as a novice
