The only thing I can suggest is to contact Dell as it is a new machine.
Do not go trying different ideas that may work or may invalidate your guarantee.
Just ensure that the headphones are unplugged fully.
Which socket did you have the headphones plugged in to, front or rear?

When I installed a new sound card in my PC, I had no sound from it. Turned out that the sound output was switched off in the setup!

You can look in Control Panel for the Audio Manager, it may be named something like mine:
Realtek Audio Manager
and see what your settings are.
Also click the speaker symbol in the systray next to the clock, or if not visible click the little up arrow to expand the systray items menu and click it there.
Make sure it has not been set to MUTE or turned off when you plugged the headphones in.
Just do those checks.
