firefox
last couple of days firefox has been very slow to start, eventually kicking in after about 25 mins of apparent inactivity
i'm using google chrome at the moment, seems ok but while i like google i feel there is a wee global domination thing going on in the background
personal preferences i know, same as preferring AMD over intel, i'd got used to firefox & i have no intention of going back to IE if i can help it

VI,
If it is taking so long to initially start, clear out all the temp files and folders.
I don't know which Operating system you use but if XP or Vista:
1st thing to do is clear out all your temporary files, tool of choice is ATF Cleaner, it is free and you do not have to install it. Download and instructions here (Windows XP, 2K, 2003 & Vista ONLY)
* NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, click No at the prompt.
-- Click on ATF-Cleaner to run it
-- Where it says Select Files To Delete, Check the Select All Option
-- Click Empty Selected - > OK
You use Firefox browser, so do this also:
* Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
* Click the Empty Selected button.
Do you have Ccleaner installed?
If so, open Ccleaner -> click the Cleaner Button on the left -> in the Applications tab under Firefox place a tick in 'Compact Databases'.
Click Analyze -> when the list appears, click Clean.
If you don't have Ccleaner, may I recommend getting it and follow these CCLEANER Setup Instructions
You could also try Speedyfox, which is so simple to use and does make a noticable difference:

Do you use all those toolbars?
The latest Java Console is v6.0.18 so click on Check for addon updates and if you get the 6.0.18, remove all the others.
If it does not update to v6.0.18, then uninstall all the earlier ones and just keep 6.0.15.
Did you use the cleaners?
To see if it is the addons that are slowing down Firefox, start it in Firefox (safe-mode) and time its startup.
How to start Firefox in Safe Mode
1. Close down Firefox completely
2. Click Start -> All Programs list ->go to the Mozilla Firefox folder. In the Mozilla Firefox folder, select Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode). Then select disable all addons.
Note: You can also start Firefox in Safe Mode by clicking Start, selecting Run (or use the Start Search box in Windows 7 and Vista) and then entering the following in the text field:
firefox -safe-mode

You can get rid of the microsoft .net framework assistant 1.1 too!
Also get rid of the Adobe DLM. That will have come down with the last Adobe update.
To control what installs at updates go into Tools>Options>Advanced (far right), click on the 'Update' tab and select "Ask me what I want to do" below where it says, "When updates to Firefox are found:" and that way anytime an add on tries to install on your pc, you can decide whether or not to allow it.

Any number of ways.
Windows Control Panel -> Programs -> Add/Remove list and uninstakll from there.
Use Revo Uninstaller if you have it installed.
Open Firefox -> Tools -> Addons -> Extensions -> click each one and click uninstall -> click to restart Firefox.
