Removing Ceramic Tiles from Kitchen Floor

Hello,
I have been removing old ceramic tiles from my kitchen floor as many were cracked and I plan to replace with Vinyl Sheet flooring or Vinyl Tiles.
Strangely, I have been able to remove about 75% of the tiles by hand alone, no tools required. They just lifted straight off the floor, with the adhesive just crumbling away as I pulled them up fairly cleanly. Its as if they were not stuck down at all, which is probably why so many were cracked. Underneath the tiles was a wooden based floor (like sheets of wood, not floorboards).
This is a first floor flat built in 2001. I think this is the original flooring and was done super-cheaply by the developer.
However, the remaining tiles seem to be stuck down in a different way and I can't seem to remove them with ease like I did the others. They leave behind a lot more adhesive etc. What can I do to remove these stubborn tiles? What tools/products should I get?
Also, what would I have to do to prepare the floor before laying new vinyl?
Many Thanks
Darren
