A couple of years back i saw i guy making a security gate ,looked like he was using a mig welder,i just wondering how difficult it would be to make a gate if you have not welded before,and how much it would cost in metal thanks.

Mig is probably the easy welding process to pick up.
Noone to show you, you may pick it up in a few weekends, someone showing you, you may pick it up in only a few hours.
But, the setup cost is substantialy dearer than a stick welder.

If you only want one gate, and dont plan on welding again, get it made, it'll be cheaper

I am probably a dreamer, but still what is a stick welder and can it do the same work as a mig welder.

Thats a good question, some say yay, some say nay.

I say nay. Each have advantages and disadvantages.
Mig is more of a production method, speed, ease....
Stick is slower, but lends itself to special electrodes, site work etc.

Stick welder used a flux coated electrode, the metal part of the electrode is the filler metal, the flux coating shields the molten weld pool, and prevents oxidisation.

Mig welding, uses thinner wire from a reel, as the filler metal, and is shielded with a gas mixture, Argon,Co2 and oxygen. Strictly speaking though, when that gas mix is used, it become MAGS welding....

I must sign up at a night school and give it a go cheers.Have you done much lead welding.
