Why on earth uninstall your browser to just try to get rid of search history in a toolbar?

First thing to do to get your homepage back is to do a system restore to back when your homepage was showing.

If the link (above) did not help (which it should have done if you had not jumped the gun and gone too far):
Then uninstall the Google toolbar:

http://www.google.com/support/toolbar/b ... nswer=9231

After that, you can reinstall it and set it to what you want.

Hi dave i uninstalled it because it said on the web that if you cannot delete your toolbar history the browser may have been hijacked, also on my norton the antiphishing was turned off not by me.When i usually start up it goes straight to the talktalk page but now it doesnt,it goes to google default igoogle.

Uninstalling IE8 on a computer that HAD IE7 and was updated, will simply revert you back to IE7, and if the browser was hijacked, then the older version will be also.
We have two different things going here, one is your search history that you want deleting and the other is a possible infected browser.

Starting with the second problem:
download MalwareBytes' AntiMalware using the BLUE button for the FREE version.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:

o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
o Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

* Then click Finish

If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.

* Once the program has loaded, select > Perform Quick Scan, then click > Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click > OK, then > Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click > Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Save this log to My Documents in case it is needed for reference.
Reboot as required.

Do this and then we can see what the problem is with the toolbar.

When you say the "Files etc in the top left" I assume you mean the Menu Bar in your browser. If so, right click any empty space at the top of the screen and you should get a context menu with:
Menu Bar
Navigation Bar
Customize

Tick Menu Bar and it should re-appear.

As for recoverying your files, it depends upon what the recovery disk overwrote.
Try Recuva from the makers of Ccleaner

The problem with me as dave has said i jump the gun.

-- Sun Apr 25, 2010 2:27 pm -- done the recover scan nothing found, deep scan takes an hour do i have to be connected to the internet when it doing this cheers.

-- Sun Apr 25, 2010 2:53 pm --

When i used the recovery dvd i recovered windows to the first partition only,it says this option will delete only the first partition, allowing you to keep other partitions, and create a new system partition as drive c what ever that means.

What i have noticed is since i have reinstalled the email key works ,before i had to press arrow up and 2  Is there anything else i should do dave, looks like all this security software doesnt protect your systems that well .Do you think i did the right chose when i installed to the first partition only  cheers

Sorry, been off line all afternoon and evening, family round for dinner and a game of cards. (Not Happy Families)

Let's start again.
"I am trying to get files, view fav tools help that use to be at the top left corner "
You mean the Menu Bar but in what program, because the Menu bar appears in browsers, and all sorts of application windows.
Which 'window' is it missing from? The browser or an application like Word or something.

If it is missing from the browser, did you rigt click on an empty part of the Address bar? If so what did the menu say.

What operating system do you have, XP, Vista or Windows 7
What browser do you now have, IE7 or IE8
Why do you need the file dropdown menu to install Norton.

"Do you think i did the right chose when i installed to the first partition only"
What do you mean by that? When you installed WHAT to the first partition?

dave

I've re-read your last post and see that you put the OS onto partition C:, which is where it should go, so that bit is OK.

any further reports as to what is happening?

dave
