Righto people, seems I better start using this sites knowledge!

Got a fixer-upper of a house to move into within 3 months(wedding in August(!)) and we've just had the living/dining room re-plastered so that's all fine and dandy. Next target is the kitchen, left by the previous occupants in a slight state of unrepair after their new kitchen was installed. Lifted the old tiles on the floor/halfway up the wall and I'm left with the old dried adhesive.

Question is:

Will I have to fire up the old sander to get the old adhesive off and strip it back to bare ground to reapply new adhesive?

you can either scrap it with a spade or floor sraper to remove the highest spots or pour SLC over to level and smooth it of if ts only a few mm worth you could also build up your adhesive bed to cover the worst!

As marc says...scraper for the floor or if you have an SDS drill with rotary stop you can use the chisel attachment. Adhesive on walls you have the added option of using a steamer.

The scrapers that take what looks like a bloody long stanley blade are good for tubbed adhesive, not so good on bagged. Floor should be bagged adhesive and if it was proper tiler who did the walls then it will be bagged again.

Whatever you do to the floor, make sure that appliances will still fit under worktops after new tiles are laid !!!!

already had the appliance height covered as it's been brought up, it'll be a family relative on the fiancees side that'll be doing the tiling, got this bagged adhesive and tiles waiting!
