Support for Windows Vista without any service packs ended on April 13, 2010.

Support for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) will end on July 13, 2010.

If you're running one of these versions after support ends, you won't get security updates for Windows.

Click here and scroll down for info about how to get SP3 for XP or SP2 for Vista

If you have XP Pro and it has the Service Pack SP3 installed, you should be OK for security updates for the foreseeable future.
Ensure that Internet Explorer is version 8, even if you don't use it as a browser, and you use Firefox or another browser instead. That way you are a lot more secure when using the internet.

I never used Vista, as I had two PCs with XP Home and Pro on them, and could not see any reason to upgrade when they did the jobs that I wanted them to do.
The oldest with XP Home packed up quite some time ago after giving very good service for several years.
My old PC with XP Pro decided to pack up one me so I bought a new PC with Win 7 Home Premium. I liked it a lot and when I had chance, I got the older PC working again and got an OEM version of Windows 7 and installed it on that machine.
Just been treated to a new laptop and that has Win 7 Home Premium too.

Dave,
The last time I tried to install Internet Explorer 8 I had major problems trying to Log in to Ultimate handyman.
So I reverted back to the older version.

:dunno:

Is IE 8 essential.

I am running with Windows XP

I still have no idea why IE8 will not let you log into UHM, but at the present time, Microsoft are still issuing security bulletins for IE7 as well as IE8. This will continue until well after IE9 is released as a full working browser. So no need to worry as long as you have SP3 for Windows XP installed.
Ensure that Internet Explorer is version 8
I said that just incase MG had still got IE6 installed, because Microsoft have sort of disowned it now. Not much point in going IE6 to IE7 now that IE8 is available. But if it causes problems then uninstall and install IE7.
