You have about 15 hours left to download this for free:
Ashampoo Home Designer
I have just installed it on my PC but not had a play with it yet.
If, once installed and registered, you open it and click the Help button, you can download a 'getting started' video. Save it to desktop or downloads so that you can keep playing it without having to use broadbad width everytime you want to watch it.

Sketchup is good if you can get on with it. I struggle sometimes because I don't use it a lot.
As the name suggests, a sketch is very easy to do. But I find it difficult to do real to scale diagrams. Also, if you're doing a diagram which is not a model (wiring diagram) then this is not so easy in sketchup.
There's a 2d package called "Dia" which is free, it's kind of a clone of Visio. Might be useful if all you need is 2d.
There's also the online "Google Docs" which has a diagram package which is fine for basic stuff, and no software to install.
