when my van is cold in the mornings, I put it in second and it flies.

I mean it takes off up the road like it has a turbo. 2nd 3rd 4th up to 60mph, like a petrol car or a young pup of a van.

once the sun hits her or a few miles on the motorway shes back to her normal self, I have to pull into the side to let the HGV's by, going up hills in 1st.

I had it MOT'd and serviced and it helped a bit. I tried that petrol in a bottle to clean the injectors, I think it slowed it down.

with diesels it can be a lot of things , but common is fuel and/or compression, right? there is some black smoke upon starting in morning and when it is under load.

its 98, swb, ex BT, 82k.

its maddening , like it shows you it can be this , but most of the time its a donkey.

EGR valve?

Not sure what the fuel consumption is like when it's 'flying' but it sure won't be good!

You could fool the ECU into thinking the engine is 'cold' all the time by taking the water temperature sensor out.

whats that egr valve? is that in the fuel pump?

I dont know would my van have a an ECU, im clueless with engines. its old and basic. i had transits with turbo's before and thats what this feels like when it go's!

but with the hot weather lately its so sluggish. put a load in it and 1st is the only option .

i have the haynes manual, ill try that water sensor for a day.

What I mentioned is no guarantee to extra power. The ECU controls so many aspects of an engine that you can bugger the vehicle up if you do the wrong thing.

Simply disconnecting the water temperature sensor won't do - the ECU will treat it as a fault and flash the engine service light and (possibly) stop the engine.

You would have to REMOVE the sensor entirely and block the hole remaining to prevent water loss.

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve recirculates exhaust gases back into the engine to reduce emissions and does tend to 'choke' an engine somewhat. You would be best off taking it to a diesel engine specialist for a tune-up.

id read there was something in common with transits of that year(s) , with their fuel pumps, that could be tweaked.

the diesel specialist was the option I was looking at alright. not a whole lot of them popping up on google for north london though.

EGR Valve; disconnect vac tube and bung it. although the actual valve may need a clean if not seating properly.

O2 Sensor; usually runs on a default map until they warm up.... could be a possible cause.... black smoke due to excessive air in mixture.

i doubt its the fuel pump tbh.

If I do that how will it change it, I mean will it stop it going so bloomin slow, or will it stop the van from taking off like a bullet?

I will try these things out at the weekend and see how she goes.
