Does anyone know how to do a force delete in XP
Sometimes after viewing videos of my camera I get a message saying it is being used by another program, despite shutting down the viewer
Bring back DOS!
Force Delete

Re: Force Delete
Are you viewing the videos directly from the camera, e.g. via USB, or have you copied them to your computer? If you're viewing them directly from the camera the camera may be preventing you from deleting the files, rather than the viewer on your computer. If you've copied them to your computer the program you're using to view the videos is probably not exiting correctly and is locking the files.
Find the name of the program that you're using to view the videos by right-clicking on the shortcut to the program and choosing Properties. In the box called Target will be the path the the program and it's name, e.g. wmplayer.exe. Next load Task Manger by right-clicking down near your computer clock and choosing Start Task Manager. Go the the tab labelled Processes, click on the column header called Image Name to order the processes by name. Scroll down to the process with the same name as your video program, right-click on it and choose End Process, choose Yes in the warning dialog. Now try to delete the file again. If you can't see the process in the list you may need to check the box Show processes from all users.
If you're still having problems, I've successfully used a tool called Unlocker http://www.filehippo.com/download_unlocker/ Read the Readme file with the download for instructions. Also note that during the install of Unlocker, if you choose not to install the Bing toolbar you have to wait 30 secs to continue the installation. You will also probably want to untick the option to install eBay shortcuts. Unlocker will only work if it's a program on your computer that's locking the file, rather than the camera that's preventing the file deletion.

Re: Force Delete
If you already have MalwareBytes AntiMalware (MBAM) installed it has a File assassin as one of it's tools.
Open MBAM click More Tools tab
Under File Assassin, click Run Tool
Browse to and select the file you want stopped and deleted.
