Channel wiring in brick walls

Post by mg1prg »

Hi guys,

Anyone got any recommendations on a power tool I could use to channel brick walls for wiring? Bit of a novice in this area.. a mate of mine recommended looking into getting a wall chaser.. would he be right?

A wall chaser would be ideal, but some models are serious money!

all a wall chaser is is two cutting discs about an inch apart, if you've got an angle grinder you can achieve the same result. it is a very dusty method though!

I thought you could use a drill with rotarty stop for channeling out but I might be wrong, haven't done any wiring yet.

It is much neater and easier if you cut a chase first with a wall chaser and then chisel the channel out with a SDS drill like you say

Can you make the chase with the SDS drill or do you need another tool?
Probably sounds like a dumb question but I'm totally clueless with power tools. Thought I bought a dead drywall screwdriver last week because I didn't know the bit only rotates when it's pushed against a surface.

You can make a chase with an sds drill with rotary stop, but it is not as neat or as fast as using a wall chaser.

A chaser cuts a really neat channel, which is easy to conceal afterwards.

If you use the sds drill it is like using a hammer and chisel and so it is often not possible to get a clean, neat chase and often the channel will be much wider than if a chaser was used.

If you are only chasing the odd cable then a sds drill is fine. If you are doing them regularly, like a pro sparks would do than a wall chaser is a very useful machine.

yeah I kinda am really Hitch.. I mean i've got quite a few good mates in trades and they've taught me loads and made me enthusiastic about doing jobs myself over the years cos they've passed on help and knowledge. That's made me get into researching and buying various tools and learning how to do things, cos I think it's so satisfying when you do the job yourself! I think it's great having a collection of different tools even if some of them only get used rarely - think that has something to with being a bloke!

wall channels

Post by ItalySteve »

more of a question than an answer i'm afraid.

Here in italy there is a make called VALEX, made in china but designs seem remarkably similar to others

they make a wall chaser, 1200watts, two diamond blades 150mm, cuts to 44mm deep, has vacuum attachment and seems like good twin handle arrangement. All for equivelent of £65 inc vat. Replacement twin pack of disks £11
VALEX SCM 150
as i'm just about to restore an old house here in italy and as a DIyer I think this looks worth a go. Anyone else heard or used VALEX equipment.

Further small challenge, over here you can buy a 600 watt 115 mm angle grinder no make i've ever heard of for equivelent of £8.50.!!
Anyone beat that for DIY use

Hi steve,

You don't often see cheap wall chasers and so that seems like a bargain, although I have never heard of that brand before.

The angle grinders- I have seen some for sale for £3.50 in the past, but I would not touch them with a barge pole as they are crap to put it bluntly.

I think hitch commented on how bad they are for causing vibration in a previous post. If you can put up with the vibration then they are a throw away item at that price
