telephone socket wiring

telephone socket wiring
Can anyone please help me as every site I have visited says the same thing but does not give me a answer! I am wiring a telepnone extention and it all the guidence I have read talks about my cable when I open it up should have a number of coloured wores with stripes. Well here is my problem it does not it is red green yellow and black or a dark brown colour! which colour goes into which terminal please!

There have been many colour codes in use over the years -- and frankly, it doesn't matter as long as you're consistent in the colours you use and the terminals you connect them to. You may even have flex rather than cable.
Have a look at

and you'll see how colours are sometimes used to match the colours you have to conventional cable colours.
Just make sure that whatever colour you use to connect to terminal two on one socket is used to connect to terminal two on all of them. Similarly with terminals 3 (if you're using it)and 5.

As the OP does not have dual colour telephone cable and the instructions from the Philippines will probably confuse him, I am going to ask the Mods to remove those useless posts.

just do as suggested earlier and use one colour, no matter which one, to connect terminal 2 in the Master socket and same into the extension socket. Then use another colour to connect to terminal 5 in both sockets.
Use a 'Pushdown tool' to push the wires into the terminals (unless they are screw terminals) because if you use a screwdriver to push them in you will probably open up the sides of the grips and lose connection. You can get a cheap plastic tool for about 50p from Maplins and most other electrical retailers. Alternatively use an old credit card.
Once you have connected terminals 2 & 5 check your phone for incoming and outgoing calls. If the bell rings (which it should) you do not need to connect terminal 3. Just coil up the spare wires but do not cut them short, as you may need them one day.
