Kitchen on a budget

Post by Dave-M »

Hi Folks,

I have a few questions about buying a new kitchen on a budget. I've seen some doors at B&Q called "slab white gloss" and they keep coming on offer at around 75% off, well anyway, to cut a long story short, this means that the doors will cost about 120 ish as opposed to £450+ at top whack. My first question is this, have any of you used these doors, and how are they? Any staining, do they mark/scratch easily etc? I'm not expecting miracles for the price, but if they are garbage then I'll look elsewhere.

Also, the carcasses that B&Q sell for these, are they decent or is there an alternative? Same for the hinges too, and the bits that make up the drawers.

Finally, a local kitchen fitter has quoted me £800 labour to:
  • Remove/replace sink, 800 carcass underneath, 600 drawer set, refit new worktop.
    Add 1x 500 wall unit
    Add 1x 300 wall unit
Add 1x 600 chimney extractor between the two above units
fit new doors to:
  • 5x 500
    2x 400
    1x 600x900
    2x 300
  • Fit new drawer fronts and runners to new carcass

Fit 14x handles to new doors

Bespoke boiler cabinet (see the 600x900 door above), basically this is just 3 bits of gloss white panel and a door, a simple construction.

Fit 3x end panels to the floor cupboards.

Fit 4x end panels to the wall units.

    Fit cornice and pelmets to 4x wall cupboards top and bottom, 1x 500, 1x 300, 2x 1000.

    Fit plinths - 3x

Fit some small bits of gloss white board to hide gaps etc
Worth £800 labour? Says it'll take him 3-4 days. His portfolio looked impressive, but it's hard to tell if it's legit or not.

Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks :)

Edit: I'm in Manchester by the way, in case the prices vary up and down the country.

the 600 x 900 is ringing alarm bells, make sure the measurements are spot on.
800 is ok for the labour, there is more messing about with a kitchen like yours than a complete new one.
units from b+q are what they are cheap budget. having said that i went to buy 5 500 base units a few mths ago, expecting to be around 20- 25 quid. £45. left them on the the trolley and got them made for £3 less far superior with blum hinges.

Hi prem,

Thanks for the reply.

About the 600x900, why are alarm bells ringing there? The door that's on now is definitely 600x900, its a fairly big cupboard housing a combi boiler and loads of pipes and all the electrics. B&Q do a 597x895 door, whcih is what will be going on there, it's fine as the whole cabinet is being rebuilt because it was a bit of a bodge by whoever did it last time.
