Richie, or anyone for that matter can you please supply some links for FREE spyware remover software as my computer is running very slow at the moment, also is there any software that is good at de-fragmenting as the utility that comes as part of windows never works on anyones computer!
Thanks
UHM
p.s. I don't want software that scans for free and then charges you to remove it, but free scan and removal please!

- Download Adaware
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial
The program is available for download here - Download Spybot
Spybot is a scanner like adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and pretection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here
Spybot can be downloaded at this location - Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes "kill bits" in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster here here - Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the "bad" webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here
Download it here
As for defragmenting, use Diskeeper Lite from here It's not free for much longer as it's being used in the next version of Windows it's so good.
If you're still having problems with spyware after that lot, you'll probably need to do a Hijack This log over at Webuser. Spyware's getting much more crafty these days and the software can't catch all of it.
Glad you asked now?

Thanks Richie,
You certainly know your stuff!
I just had a problem where links would not open in IE, I went to webuser and found one of your posts that answerd the question
I'm also having probs with my connection at the minute as I am changing ISP's and I think that my old supplier V21.co.uk has slowed down my connection. If anyone is thinking of joining V21.co.uk don't bother they are a waste of time!

Here's the story-
I joined V21 four years ago, back then broadband was expensive, especially the connection, which was about £150.
I had been paying £19.99 per month for these four years and now I noticed many cheaper options, some of these on V21. I telephoned them to see if I could get a better deal as I had been a loyal customer for 4 years. The guy on the other end of the phone decides to try and bullshit me, saying i was connected differently then everyone else and so they could not put me on the £14.99 per month deal like new members get
I argued and he said he waould pass me onto sales- he did, I was landed in a queue :pain10:
I hung up after 5 mins and looked elsewhere, found euro1.net £240 for 2 years, not on it yet so cannot comment!
V21 send me a letter saying they can do me a better deal, why did they not just give me a better deal in the first place
I ring them to get a migration code, get passed from pillar to post, end up on cnacellation line, listen to recording and get disconnected 5 times
Today I phone them and they inform me that I have to pay £30 for the Migration code, I am sure this was not in the original contract but they can easily change an online contract.
Hence I was not happy with them!
They had been great but when you want a better deal they are very difficult to deal with
