Hi. Trying to install a Norton scurity suite on SWMBO's laptop (running Wndows Vista) but nowt seems to happen. Keep putting the CD in and waiting for instructions which never appear. On my old XP machine, you simply go My Computer, CD-RW Drive (E), but I can't seem to find that on the laptop. Can anyone help, please? Thanks in advance for any info.

May I suggest you dump it and load the free version of AVG which is better than Norton.

Hi Ron,

Bit late but I have been out today.

What operating system do you have on the laptop?

If My Computer is not showing in the Start Menu, right click the Start button and select Properties.
In the Start Menu tab click Customize and scroll down to where it says My Computer. Put a tick/dot in the 'Display As A Link'. Click OK -> Apply -> OK
That should get it back in the Start Menu so that you can open it and find your E:/ drive to auto run the Norton.

Some Microsoft instructions about Autorun not working:

Sorry to bump this old thread, but we still can't get Autorun to work on the laptop. Tried all avenues including checking the registry key, and we're now thinking it's a fault with the drive itself. Can anyone give me an idea of what it might cost to get fixed, please? Another option is to forget the drive and download a security suite, but (hopefully not a silly question) if we go on-line to do that with no security installed, would the laptop be vulnerable, even if only for a few minutes? Thanks again for any help or advice.

Downloading AVG Free is OK for now, but it doesn't resolve the problem with the drive for future use.

Laptop drives are quite a bit more expensice than desktops, as you usually need a particular drive for the laptop. New ones around the £40 - £50 mark, although ebay is a good source.

However, before writing it off, daft question, but did you actually try to run the CD in a different computer? Have you tried a different disk in the laptop?

Ron,
If, as Richie suggests, the CD runs on another computer and no other CD works or runs on the laptop, especially if it does not show in My Computer, then we can assume that it is defective.
Rather than trying to get it fixed with all the extra expense of it being a laptop, you could get one of these:

Liteon ETDU108-02 8x External Slimline DVD ROM which is USB powered and just plugs into a USB port on the laptop.

As for downloading without a Security Program installed, Windows Firewall should cut in, check in Control Panel -> Windows Firewall, and it should offer enough protection just to download a program. Remember to ensure that the Win Firewall is turned off when you install a new program that includes a firewall.

If you have the 'Key' for Norton, try downloading the program from http://www.symantec.com/downloads/index.jsp
Or have a look at the thread NOW! That‘s What I Call Software. 2. and pick one of the free programs on the list

I'd also check that there're no errors for the DVD drive in Device Manager. Click Start, then in the search box type Device Manager and click on the link. Look for an exclamation mark under DVD/CD-ROM Drives. I've seen this on a couple of PCs where the DVD stopped working and it was fixed with a registry key.

Just to say a belated thanks to everyone who helped. In the end we downloaded the AVG jobby (which seems pretty good) and will try to fix the drive when time (and the demands of a new baby!) permit. Thanks again lads.
