My PC was working fine until Norton did an update. Now it will not connect to the internet and comes back with a DNS error on the Home page

After searching using the error message and reading a number of forum topics many appear to be linked to virus infection. However, in my case as my system was perfect until the Norton update I think it is down to a corruption of the registry entry oleaut32.dll being knocked out which I also found on a forum.

Checking I see a number of places that I can download oleaut32.dll but I am worried that they might be dodgy sites. Any advice on the fix please.

Run a search for it on your own system. You should have a backup.

Make sure your search hidden files/folders and system files.

Then copy and paste it into the C:\Windows\System32 folder.

i ran norton upgrade on both my machines this morning with no adverse effects

No luck. I searched and found the oleaut32.dll file still in the System 32 folder. Looking at properties it does nit show a revision since 2004.

Ran Norton full scan..nothing detected and cleared down TIF's and History.

Pretty sure it is the Browser not responding. The symbols are all up to show that the Belkin wireless is connecting and receivng the signal and the monitor icon shows the IP address connected as well.

An ideas what to try next please?

Can you try a System Restore to a time before this happened?

If the System restore doesnt work, there are a few options you can look at.

Norton is a real pain in the A*** and so is mcafee, they just love eating up the cpu and causing problems. I used to be a die hard Symantec fan till I had some serious problems they just could not solve.

Ironically if you download a Dll file, you could also run a virus check on it using Norton to check its ok and then re-install it.

If that doesnt work and you think it is a virus problem that Norton might not be picking up, then i would download a 30 day trial of NOD32, one of the best AV their is. Disable Norton, disconnect from the internet, restart your PC and give it a NOD checkup, that should find any hiding virus.

Depending on how long you have left with Norton subscription, you could remove it and continue to use NOD32, or uninstall it and run the Free AVG anti virus, which is what I use on a number of machines and have had no problems (touch wood). Even if you dont do it now, when your subscription runs out I would uninstall Norton (all symantec products) and run AVG.

Some other free and good things to install are
AVG Free anti-virus
Spybot search and destroy (spyware killer, free and worth installing)
Lavasoft Ad-aware SE personal edition (adware killer, Free and worth installing)
Also a good free firewall is Zonealarm personal.

I was so pissed off with the problems I decided to buy a new PC. The existing one is 7 years old now and I have had a succession of issues of late so it is time to go. Got a good deal off PC world clearance, a factory reconditioned Compaq with Pentium and IGB memory and more importantly XP rather than Vista. Only £200 with 12 months warranty. Start fresh and clean. I have made a vow to myself to upload all my stuff to my BT digital vault and keep a back up on memory sticks so that I can do a complete restore in future if any of this starts again.

from my experience norton is a load of crepe and should be exorcised from your machine asap - look here for a norton removal utility ( from the symantec web site)

turn off unwanted services and free your computers resources to do what u want it to do :)
