Do I need to replace the plasterboard?

Hi,
Im about to start tiling my bathroom and whilst I can see on here that you can tile over tiles i get the impression that your better taking them off, especially as the wall I want to tile is only half tiled at the moment and Im worried about getting it even. Besides the genius that fittted the existing tiles never left any spaces between the tiles so theyre all sat on each other - DOH!
The wall the tiles are on is set on plasterboard and what I want to know is........once Ive taken them off - how can I tell if the plasterboard is good enough to reapply new tiles or if I need to take the plasterboard off and start again? Ive taken one tile off already and its brought a little of the first layer of the plasterboard off with it.
Many thanks :)
