Extra high kitchen plinth

Post by munchiez »

Hi all, first poster here hoping for a bit of advice :hello2:

I've almost finished fitting the kitchen in our first house renovation. I'm pretty pleased with it as a first attempt although I'd definitely do a few things differently next time!

My biggest mistake was setting the worktop too high. I was sure I'd measured a double checked but the height still ended up at being 92cm (maybe I didn't take the worktop thickness into account). All the same I'm happy with the height but the problem I've got is that the plinth supplied with the kitchen wasn't anywhere near tall enough to fill the space (I think it was about 15cm). Another problem is that the kitchen floor's got a bit of a slope, it's a U-shaped kitchen and the units that extend out have a maximum plinth height of 22cm.

A friend suggested using planks of wood for the plinth and painting them but I don't think this would give a great finish. The doors are from IKEA and are a slightly off white colour but I think the plinths that were supplied with it were pure white. Does anyone know of anything that'd be more suitable?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as the cat seems to have found a new favourite place to hide!

Just take a door into a decent timber merchants & ask them for a match, worst case is that it may need ordering, dont forget to ask for edge banding too. They should have no probs sending it through the table saw for your 220mm either if its a fascia end panel etc.

Hi Munchiez
I don't know if ikea do a fitter panel ..(240cm x 60cm in door colour ) but if they do buy one of these and cut it down in strips to the size you require .. cut it oversize and then you can scribe into the floor and make a good job..alternatively buy some whit contiplas from your local diy merchant they make it 9" x 1/2" again cut to size on site .
220mm is very high even for some ranges .. that would make it 960 to top of worktops.. about 55mm higher than standard.. How far have you got along with the installation? .. is it not possible to lower the units on the adjustable legs ?
If you have any freestanding appliances you will end up with a rather large gap at the top of the machine and underside of worktop...... or just buy really thick floor tiles

White melamine faced chipboard is what you want. Buy it in 300mm width at 2.4m long and rip it down to what you need as a plinth. I had to do this on a kitchen fit where the floor ran out by 100mm over a 3m run. Great fun. :cb

I am with Joinerjohn and seeing as conti board has a dull white finish it should match what you have quite well.
