Hmmm... need to get a duct through a floor? hack away !

This is where you can post pictures of extremely poor workmanship, whether it is done by a dodgy tradesman or by an incompetent DIY'er. Instructions on how to post pictures can be found in here.

Hmmm... need to get a duct through a floor? hack away !

Post by Chris the builder »

Took down a garage ceiling (part of a convo) & found this beauty... from the looks of it the "heating engineer" would stop at nothing to run his flue, even removing a supporting floor joist to the underside of the bathroom!

A big flue like that has regs to follow, how else would you suggest he installed it, assuming he cut the joists in the first place.

Good point Scruff, I'm sure the joist was already randomly cut away at 45 degrees

Scruff, I sincerely & respectfully ask that you stop following my posts, you are the one person who makes visiting this brilliant website tiresome, my friends call it "being anal".

You are defending a cowboy who has lobbed off a flooring joist without any attempt at supporting it thereafter, also leaving a loom of cables lying across a hot metallic duct. Regs to follow? are you joking? how about this one "try to do your job without killing someone after your done" how else would I suggest he installed it? is that what you would say to a concerned customer? that is the worst reply I have ever heard in a long long time lol.

Did you see the plumber cut the joist, perhaps the cowboy builder did it when it was built/converted.

The cables were off the pipe, it's only the bell wire or phone, and who knows at what stage that was put in.

I would guess there's no weight in that corner anyway, as I bet a pound to a penny there's a great big box in the corner, perhaps the joist has been fixed to the wall, you can't see in one pic.

Get used to it, the mods check every post, and stop assuming unless you were there and saw who did what.

So you have third party information that the plumber did it, and decided to slag whoever it was off.

Ok it's sh*t and not right but any jack could have done it.

Assuming it isn't how much trouble would it be to chemically fix that first joist to the wall.

And since we're on the subject, the second joist has been taken out and replaced, was that the plumber as well.
I love UHM & told my workmates about it, it's great but you are spoiling things.

Scruff as I don't have anything to do with that type of flue can you tell me if it's twin wall and what the clearance to combustible materials should be (25mm?) I presume it's going to need a plate around it where it goes through the ceiling?

I'd agree the joist needs chemically studding back to the thermolites.

Of course knowing how lazy heating engineers are it's quite possible the builder hacked the joist away after they told him what clearance they needed

Yes it should have a plate on it with a 25mm air gap.

Can't see the end of the flue where it goes through the floor or out the wall. looks as though it goes into a single skin.

But it would need 600mm vertical pipe (I think) off the boiler and then 45% bends. post the boiler make and model and I'll tell you.

Not that it makes any difference but it looks like 6" selkirk twin wall.

No-one trying to justify cowboy antic Gadget.

It could have been the heating guy, a specialist flue Company, the builder or the bloody gardener for all know. ::b
