I used the free version of AVG for a long time but it became problematical for me about a year ago, I switched to Avast which seems to be reliable and trouble free, (and recommended in the link).

Slightly off the original topic (but I started it so what the hell, people will get the message about AVG), I use Firefox 3.6.13 as my default browser but I also use Pale Moon as I reported on
in this thread which is much faster than Firefox but still looks just like Firefox. Have a read of the thread.

I've moved over to the free MS Security Essentials - PC is much quicker after removing AVG and using this. Anyone else tried it?

I use Comodo Firewall and MSE on this desktop and am pleased with both.
I use Comodo Internet Security Suite on laptop and that works fine with very little resource usage.

Security Essentials is free for computers that pass WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) and are legit copies.
It's a fantastic piece of software for the following reasons:
- It's the same core (with the recent update) that is used by MS themselves to protect their internal assets
- It's updated by Windows Update - it's hassle free
- It's available for Windows XP, Vista and 7 (32 and 64 bit)
- it doesn't constantly feel the need to TELL you that it's doing it's job to make you get excited
- It's simple to use and operates a 'traffic light' system (Green - OK, Amber - attention, Red - at risk)
- It offers Spyware AND Huristic virus scanning
If you've not tried it for a while, highly recommend it. It's NOT like Defender used to be and you might find a sytem improvement.
That is all
