Guys, Guys.

Picked up a load of various tools with other bits and pieces and I found some Chisels amongst other things.

I've just been to the flat (the back door lock had jammed locked) and replaced the lock, required some adjustment to the holes so had to do some chiselling! Used my plastic handled Stanleys which did OK but they've been abused (by a bad man) and they where never really very good in the first place. Now I've got these 'other' chisels I don't know what to do?

Question should I keep these guys as they've not cost a lot or should I just suffer my Stanleys and let these go to a 'better' home?

I know nothing about chisel makes other than Marples and Sorby are thought to be reasonable makes.

Your advice and what would you do with these would be appreciated.

you can use wooden chisels with metal rings at the top of the chisel and a hammer
but in general the rule of thumb is metal on plastic or wood on wood[mallet]

so keeping that in mind do you want to carry a wooden mallet around

You know that they're valuable, especially the John Bull. You're just showing off mate????????? I'd stick em all on e-bay and sell them. You probably get 60-80 if they're all sold as a bundle!

So sling them on ebay and buy a plastic set of Marples that I can hit with a hammer? :o

B*ll*x! There is a common misconception that old = high value. Several of these chisels are well used (#4, 6 and 7) and have probably been ground to the end of their tool steel sections (older blades were made by hot forging a tool steel edge piece onto a lower grade steel backing piece). Some of them also show signs of abuse by amateurs, after all what kind of numpty uses a hammer to drive a chisel? I'd suggest cleaning them up, sharpening them and trying to use them. The better ones (#1, 2, 5 and 8) are probably worth £2 to £5 each, the socketed Marples (#3) might fetch a tenner and the Hearnshaw oval bolstered mortise chisel (#9) is probably in the £6 to £10 area as well.
