So which gutter installation is correct?

This is where you can post pictures of extremely poor workmanship, whether it is done by a dodgy tradesman or by an incompetent DIY'er. Instructions on how to post pictures can be found in here.

So which gutter installation is correct?

Post by southwood3 »

I came across this interesting choice of gutter installation in Trowbridge, Wilts, at the weekend. A pair of semi-detached houses with totally different ideas of what is right and what looks best. I favour the one on the left despite it having more downpipes. What do the pro's think?

Gutter across windows looks terrible, and limits window opening.
I started out with nothing, I still have most of it.

Both ways are correct but left hand looks more pleasing to the eye.

If they were built like it then you would assume that they would be the same; either both like the left house or both like the right house, wouldn't you? If they'd come to some agreement with the centre gutter and shared a downpipe then the righthand house would have needed only one extra drainpipe. It seems to me that both houses have had their guttering replaced at some point and neither occupant could agree on how the new stuff would be fitted so they each went their own way based purely on cost alone.

I reckon they were both built as cheap as possible with white guttering like the right hand one, and the people who bought the left had it re-done because it looks crap.

Neither house looks old enough to have needed it renewing due to age or damage.

If the right hand house only has the one grid, then that's probably the original configuration and next door have had the extra two downspouts and drains added afterwards.

That does sound like a feasible scenario. So we'll go with that unless someone else knows better......

The left is the correct way.

Looks like the right has been changed.

The one on the right is original way it was done. Many period houses have the gutter continuance.
