Most beer now comes in non-return bottles and is packaged in cardboard and cling-wrap. Don't think it would stand up to what the OP wants.
Phil,
Some cordials, and Newcastle Brown still come in crates so have a look in your locals back yard for a couple of crates.

Re: plasterers hop up
I'd go with the crate (beer/Milk etc) or tool chest, we got a small metal step up at work which was cheap, be available from most diy stores i would think.

I've got 8 beer crates and they are worth their weight in gold, I use them for all kinds of jobs where I need that extra height!

Re: plasterers hop up
dude, thats the same as the hop up i use. well handy thing like. rather than making a hop up make yaself a table. i used to p*ss about scooping the plaster out the bucket. not now though. bit of ply and a few lengths of 25 x 38 lath is all you need.
plus a few screws and a pair of bolts to form a pivot like.

Re: plasterers hop up
i have four of them on the van, if you use them with four scaff boards you can do a whole ceiling without touching the floor!!
also handy for long runs of wall units too! saves the knees long term.

fecking ell Marc1106, how tall are you?? I never need to kneel down for wall units lol.
Stilts are another good method for plastering ceilings, as well as doing suspended ceilings.
