smoothing uneven walls

Hi there,

I have just got that stuff advertised on TV for making walls smooth. Smoothover. Looks easy but does it work. I have heard a lot of bad reports. I am no plasterer therefor thought i would try this.
I have taken tiles off the kitchen wall and it has made a mess therefor needs smoothing over.
The rest of the kitchen has been plastered by a professional but its just the edges and the mess where the tiles were that needs done.
I am not putting tiles back so would like a smooth finish.
All help appreciated.

Hi Stuart.

I have never tried it personally but I have heard that it is not all that good. I guess peoples experiences with the stuff will differ depending on exactly how bad the wall is and how much experience you have at DIY.

I can only suggest that you give it your best shot. It would be good if you could post back and let us know how you get on and even post some before and after pics if possible.

Ideally it would be good if you could learn to skim, one guy from Blackpool e-mailed me some pictures of a room he had done by following the instructions here- http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/PLASTER_SKIMMING.htm

If you ever get a small room that is not in public view that needs plastering, I suggest you give it a go. If you screw up ( which we all do) you can go over it again or get a professional to skim it!

try gyproc ready mixed plaster board joint filler, they sell it in a 12l tub in B&Q for about a tenner (it is a big tub with a yellow lid in the plaster aisle). It is easy to apply, it will shrink if put on too deep so put two coats on.
