Wiring BT master socket, NTE5 etc

Hi all,
When we moved into our house about 9 months ago the telephone line was in a stupid place under the stairs, therefore I removed the master socket, rerouted the BT wire into the front of the house. However, I didn't have enough cable so I spliced it together with some excess cable I had with some tape (!) and bam it worked. Now, first off I did not know I was not supposed to mess with the BT cable or master socket, (the previous owner I reckon had too by the looks of things).
Telephone and BB has been fine until yesterday when the line was all crackly and the BB kept dropping every minute. I undid my botch job on the wire had broken at the join. Therefore, I bought one of those outside boxes for plugs etc (the waterproof ones), a junction box connector and some more cable(with 4 wires - orange, blue, white/orange and blue/white).
On the BT line as it was when I disconnected it there are 6 (or even 7????) wires: green, black, orange, white, yellow x3. When I first moved it I pressumed the orange and white were the ones I wanted as the yellows had been cut off and the green and black twisted together and folded away.
So today I connected the white and orange from the BT cable to my junction and my other cable to the juntion and reconected this to the A and B in the master. Phone line now works and so does the BB. However, since reading on the net (now BB works again!) I see that on the NTE5 switch the master is wired (I think) by the orange and white and the others are meant to be for the detatchable bit.
Therefore by question is thus - is what I did ok to do (in a practical sense)? Do I need the full 6/7 wires attatched to everything or is this just so the NTE5 detachable part is usaable? Also, my BB is only registering at 1mbps which is pretty slow, could this be due to the wiring (I cant remember what it was before unfortunately!)
Sorry, I know that is long and I know that I shouldnt have messed with the cable, I wouldnt have if I had known, but hindsight is great isnt it!!!!
Cheers
