Hi all

I have designed my own website and done a lot of work getting higher up the search engine google at present on page 4, problem is getting higher up from doing some research I know that links are important, (have assumed they mean links to and from other URL's), need more info on links and what is a hot link (chez brought this up in a pm, not a clue what one is)

ok any help would be much appreciated below is the beginning code of my main page.

This is the bit of text that sometimes gets used under your link in search results. So it should read well but also have keywords placed in it. So should read like a call to action which will catch peoples eye and make them want to click on your link.

Google doesn't read keywords although it's worth including them as some other search engines do. but what you have got there is not a list of keywords. It should be - Boiler repairs, liverpool, gas, plumbers, mersyside.......

not many robots take account of the revist tag, they will decided when to come back to have another look. the more you update your site with fresh content the more they will comeback

one of the most important lines for SEO, if your site content matches the title then you should rank well for 'Liverpool Boiler Repairs' (by the way you don't get extra points for listing liverpool twice) Is this the search term you think people would search for most when looking for a company such as yours? I would change it to something like - 'Liverpool Boiler servicing and repairs by gas safe plumbers

I havent done a website but looking at your script I would type the meta description tag properly (this is what the Search results show in the list) and it doesn't look professional if the grammar, punctuation, caps etc are wrong.
Also your meta keywords seems a bit short - try and think of every single word that you could and put it in there - the more the merrier and also have variables in there such as "plumb, plumbing, plumber"

Do search engines still use meta tags (it has been ages since I messed with websites)?

My pathetic little web site always, well usually, ranks very well on google, 1,2 or 3 on page one ofr things like gas boiler servicing in norwich.

I recently changed the tags to include Atmos boilers and within a couple of days was coming higher than Atmos themselves!

I am far from a computer whiz kid, of anything like a SEO

, but trial and error have paid off with me and being on here has helped enormously with links.

The links have to be relevant to you and also google looks for good info in the main body of text, so I am told, but I think they still regularly change their algorythms about every 3 months or so

If you write a blog its a good way of getting a loiad of keywords and relevant search terms onto your website.Also as google likes updated content its win win again.
Try to write a load of blurb each week or at least monthly minimum.Make the page title what you want to be found for.Write the article using those terms too if you can,remember it has to be readable too.

For example

Gas safe fitter in liverpool 04/04/11

This week we had a lot of boiler installs in the {insert the area you want to be found for on google here} area this week.All these customers told us they were looking for a gas safe engineer in {insert area again} who could do a good job at a reasonable price.

blah blah blah

finish it off with

company name,
gas safe fitters in {area}
-----------------------
If you change the finish area with each article you get more and more areas you want to be found for onto your website and also by creating new pages writing the blog articles you make the site bigger and bigger which google likes too.Overtime it will really strengthen your sites position for many search terms not just a few.

Gasspark, like I said earlier - you meta description doesn't look professional if the grammar, punctuation, caps etc are wrong (e.g having liverpool starting with a cap will help) this is you main advertising line that people will see in the search results and you need to change it to something punchy to draw them to your website.

Just spotted in <title>Liverpool Boiler servicing and Repairs </title> any reason why servicing doesnt have a cap and repairs does?

As before, you need to expand on your keywords a lot. You only have about 20. If someone did a search for "boiler service in Liverpool" you will be listed somewhere amongst all the other boilers who have "boiler service" and "liverpool" in their meta keywords. If someone typed in "Valiant boiler repair in Liverpool" you will be at the bottom of the list because you don't have "valiant" as a keyword. On the other hand, if someone typed in "new boiler installation in Speke" you wouldnt even come up in the results because you don't have those keywords.

To give you an idea of how many keywords you need below is what another Liverpool plumber has. You could copy and paste his to give you a start and then add and delete keywords you think you need (and remember they are keywords and not keyphrases

Personally I would spend more time on the content of your site than keywords as they don't have the weight they once did.

Google have publically stated they don't use the keyword meta tag in their algorithm, other search engines might like yahoo and bing but again it's rumoured they only read the first 10 or 20 and even then it doesn't have much weight. The reason being is that it's very easy to spam keywords, porn websites were rife for it. A porn website could list 'Liverpool boiler repairs' in their keywords and would come up in the search results... hence why now search engines place more weight to the content of the website to tell them what's about rather than metadata.

Blogging on your website (as mentioned above) is a good way of getting good content on your website but try to make it part of your website not a sub domain, as sub domains can be classed as a different website altogether and not have a benefit to your main website . i.e. if you had a blog I would put it at a web address such as

rather than

To be honest, I wasnt too sure if they were still used at all (thats why I asked further up the thread). A lot of the mainstream search engines use each other these days like Yahoo! uses, I think, the Google database. I haven't used a meta search engine for years (like Metacrawler etc) because as you say it brings up wrong results. I could be searching for a some car tyres and end up on a porn site because they have car tyres in their keywords

Most meta tags are now ignored by search engines. The only two worth using are "description" and "keywords". The description must match the overall theme of the page. Any keywords must be matched in your content text.
As far as SERP positions go they are only relevant if the results are in excess of a million. It is fairly easy to get the number one slot on Google if your keywords are obscure. For example if you sell 'high pressure steel scuba tanks' you have a better than average chance of reaching a top three slot.

From what i have seen so far SEO is extreemly difficult to predict or master - i think a good plan is

- As many backlinks as possible - but get some high ranking ones as well as relevent ones
- Forums
- Articles
- Banners
- Don't swap links anymore - Google slap
- track on yahoo... site:www....
- keywords on your site
- well made site
- simple webbed up site (linkages)
- blog on site
- external blogs are useless
- Social networking
- Adwords to drive traffic to ensure site is active
- Good sell through rate (if selling)

Two concepts

1) On site optimisation

Make sure your content contains the keywords you need. This means the text on the page and also the page title. Put keywords in <h1> <h2> tags, consider using <strong> tags around keywords - use them in your internal links, avoid messy urls like the address of this page - ending ?mode=reply etc etc better to have keywords in urls. TO do this in ecommerce sites you need a url rewriter. Lots more, but mostly about adding lots of pages and content to your site.

2) off site optimisation - this tends to slowly improve over time as people link to you but it can take years, unless you provide a service or some content that people love and start spontaneously linking to.
