Bit of a problem with my shiny new Bench Sander

Post by Hoovie »

Hi, I was lucky enough to win the Rexon Belt Sander in the August competition - the one pictured below....

Image

Seems a nice bit of kit and I was putting it to use today sanding down the cut edges on 40 pieces of T&G cladding and the sanding disc worked loose :o

Now this is secured with an allan key, but the screw is behind the solid aluminium cast disk and I cannot see how you get in there to tighten it. Also cannot see anything in the manual that tells me how.

I am sure this is a standard maintenance requirement so there must be a fairly obvious way to tighten it but buggered if I can see it!

Any Ideas?

Cheers

Hoovie.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I gather the ally disc then fits over a shaft, not a screw from the front into the end of a shaft?
When youve sussed it out, check if theres a flat on the shaft where the grub screw should be located. :thumbright:
Happened to mine, an Axminster model.

Is there a way up from underneath, through the base or something?

I doubt its something youll get to without removing another piece though.....

dosnt seem to mention it in the instructions

http://www.screwfix.com/sfd/i/cat/pdfs/48/p3201948.pdf

you need to think lateraly like

does a hole in the case line up with the screw anywhere around its path

do you need to remove anything to gain access !!if so get into the habbit of checking the securing screw before adjusting what you need to remove

there you are hitch great minds think alike :thumbright: :thumbright:

Hell, i see they are sharpening a chisel on the belt there :o

Item 19 looks like the offender....remove the table and the housing over the wheel (14) by the look of it

You're looking at the spare parts list for those numbers, and the exploded diagram, yes?

I think there may be a mismatch  in the diagram, #19 is indeed the screw that needs tightening, but in the list, there are 4 #19's.

Looking at this diagram (don't think it is in the printed manual - have to check again) I think you are right - remove #14 - the guard and I should be able to access it :thumbright:

I will get back to confirm.

Re access without disassembly - the lateral thinking way - I saw two possibilities - one is by removing the sanding disk paper and that exposes a hole and with the right size allan key, you could insert it, but the amount of rotation possible is so little ( and the key supplied too long) so discounted that as "the way".

There is also nearly access at the bottom after removing the dust extractor plastic part, but again the allan key is a touch too long - and as this must be something that probably needs a little tighten now and again, can't be the way.

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions - appreciate it :thumbright: and if I can#t get to it, I'll have to ask for my money back :angryfire:

Hmm - THAT won't work either

In the manual it says "only for use on wood or wood like materials" so I guess it is ok to sharpen a WOOD chisel :-P

undid the two bolts holding the guard on, undid a screw at the top , Pulled off the guard and I could get to the allen key and tighten it :-) Success :thumbright:

Hang on .. so how do I put the housing back on as there is a screw that secures it that is only visible when the sanding disk is off ::b

Right - lateral thinking time again .....

Got it - when you take the support off for the sanding disk side, the notches that that go into has a hole! Marked where the allen grubscrew is, stuck the allen key through the hole and into the screw - tightened :thumbright:

Hang on ... forgot the washer for the disk guard screw  allen key through the little hole .... 10 minutes later after not locating grub screw .... Another little thing to put in the 'spare washer' drawer

I tried this out today seeing as they show that in the pic (in leiu of a proper sharpening stone) and it actually did a reasonable job :thumbright:

That could be a good idea - as long as it doesn't follow the lines of the last similar question ....

Q: How do I sharpen my Saw?
A: Buy a new one

Even I could do a tutorial like that

I think everyone sharpens their chisels eventually.

A guy at work says that B&Q has a set of three Stanley chisels for £8

Just had a quick look on their website, but it is useless and very slow ::b
