Wireless problems
Hi All,
I've recently had my Broadband installed through Sky, plugged everything in and off I went surfing away. My Mrs connected her phone to the wireless no problem but when she tries her laptop it doesn't work. She can find the signal and connect to it, but when she tries to go on any websites it just says page not available.
Any Ideas?
Thanks
Steve

Re: Wireless problems
Hi Dextrous, no its a toshiba, i've checked the thingymajig is on and it is. Its just baffled me as to why its not working. mine connected straight away and so did her phone. Its the fact that it finds the signal AND connects yet won't let her surf the web. Strange.

Re: Wireless problems
Update:
While trying to connect again my Girlfriend had a notice come up saying something along the lines of another computer connected to this network (mine) has the same IP address and may stop her computer from connecting?! I can use computers all day long but when it comes to this sort of stuff its over my head so any help would be very much appreciated.

Re: Wireless problems
Depending upon which Operating system she uses either:
Win 7 or Vista go to Start -> type cmd in the search window, or
Win XP go to Start -> Run -> then type cmd in the box.
Either of those will open the Command window.
Press Enter to move the cursor down one line.
Type ipconfig/release (this will flush the old IP Address out)
Press Enter
Type ipconfig/renew (This will set a new IP Address)
Press Enter and close the Command window.
OR if that does not work,
turn off your internet connection (probably the Function key + F2, or which ever key has the wireless mast symbol) and reconnect (same keys). It should automatically create a new IP for you (one that is not in use).
Every time you connect to a network it will automatically obtain a new IP for you.

Re: Wireless problems
Open Internet Explorer.
Click on 'tools' then 'internet options' then the 'connections' tab.
Make sure the 'dial up and virtual private network' settings box is empty - delete anything in it if not. Click on the 'never dial a connection' button.
Click on the 'LAN Settings' button and put a tick in 'automatically detect settings' then OK everything and close. Restart Explorer.

Don't take it personally......

Re: Wireless problems
To troubleshoot, open a command prompt as previously described
1) type ping 209.85.143.104
If you get a reply with ping statistics at the bottom showing packets sent = 4 and received = 4 and lost = 0 then you have connected to Google by IP address. Go to no 2)
If not, then the problem lies with the wireless adaptor or the protocols or password used
2) type ping google.co.uk
As above, if successful, then the dns is working, the problem is most likely with the browser or the firewall or antivirus. Try turning those off temporarily.
If unsuccessful, there is a DNS problem. This could be caused by a number of things but often malware. Come back if that is what you get.

Re: Wireless problems
What OS is it? (Windows XP, 7, Vista??)
It's possible that during the use of the laptop, it's had a static IP fixed (for example 192.168.1.2) which is causing a conflict with another device on your network. Wireless routers will always come with DHCP enabled - this means IT hands out the addreses to the connecting clients and is dishing out an address that someone is squatting on (your laptop?).
You will need to adjust for OS version, but you can have a look here:
1. connect to the network (doesn't matter you can't get anywhere....yet)
2. Click Start > RUN > type CMD (press Enter)
3. Enter IPCONFIG /ALL
4. You are looking for the wiress adaptor and the bit below it (I've highlighted my WIRED here as an example)
5. If it says NO next to DHCP Enabled, then that is your problem and onto the next bit - if it says YES, keep looking ;)
6. Click Start > Control Panel > Network Adaptors (or network sharing center maybe)
7. Try and find the Wireless adaptor settings.....it looks like this:
8. Click in the following order
Note: Steps 3 and 4 should be Obtain IP Address Automatically AND Obtain DNS server automatically (mine is fixed, which is wrong for you...)
9. Close all windows and try internet again
10. Prey it works ;)

Re: Wireless problems
Hi Billy goat. its running vista. i appreciate the time you took to do that unfortunately I followed your steps and it didnt work. in the local connection area box everything was already ticked and unticked as you've said to do. Could it be something to do with Norton?

Re: Wireless problems
Is it Norton system security or just anti virus?
If it's firewall too, then most definetly. Quick and dirty test is to disable it to test (normally a right click on the norton icon next to the clock and disable for 15 minutes). I've seen it in the past where it's been "learning" and blocked DHCP replies (where it gets the address).
Give it a goat....

Re: Wireless problems
I've seen Norton stop people's Internet Connections, even though they get an ip address, can ping websites and even uninstall it.
First, check you are getting an ip address as shown above. It will usually be 192.168.x.x
If you get 169.x.x.x then something is wrong with the network connection.
If she's going to renew Norton anyway, nothing to be lost by removing all traces of it first.
Download and run the Norton Removal Tool from here
Reboot and try again.

Don't you love it when you make the effort to try to help people and they don't even have the courtesy of replying to let you know how they got on?

Re: Wireless problems
Fair enough. Sorry if I came across being a bit stroppy but it gets a bit annoying when people try to help and the OP doesn't reply. Glad you got it sorted in the end.
