I've had three quotes from tilers to tile a kitchen with 450mm square tiles which is 15.6 m2.

And I'm blown away at the quotes I've been getting!

1. £25 per m2 plus £5 per m2 for wet cut
I supply the tiles, tiler supplies adhesive and grout
Total = £450

2. £550 labour only, I supply tiles, adhesive and grout

3. Level part of floor using 2 part latex levelling compound £60.00
Fix and grout 15.68m2 of granite floor tiles supplied by customer @ £40 per m2 + vat
5 Bags of Quickflex flexible Tile adhesive 20kg £84.95
1 Flexi grout 10kg £26.99
I supply the tiles

Total price including vat £924.58

Is this the average going rate for a tiler?.... I seriously think I'm in the wrong business if it is!

do it yourself.. i did my first bit on pretty shitty walls in my new kitchen and it looks great so far just needs grout!

£400-550 I would say about right for "Laying a few tiles on a floor" absolute minimum £350, assuming a level, clean surface..

If you get the floor prepped properly its easy if you have got correct tools for the job. If you do decide to give it a go make sure to research everthing you need to know before you start.

We recently tiled our kitchen (first timers!) and it has turned out well (in our eyes ).

I definitely recommend that you read up thoroughly and also measure more than once!

Laying a few tiles on a floor pmsl. Cheap tiles too!

Perhaps you should realise from the quotes, what the going rate is for your area in which you live. By all means have a go yourself, after all its only a few tiles to chuck on a floor. be prepared for a major increase in costs though if it all goes wrong or needs ripping up in 6 months time. The quotes will seem reasonable then.

You pay for knowledge, as well as the labour.

As royal oak has pointed out all depends where you live .

1. you are going to have to go and buy tile cutter and associated tools for the job look at about £100 maybe .

2. the tiler in his charges has to pay for tax,ni,petrol,advertising,servicing of vehicle and non paying r sole customers and lack of holiday and sick pay, pension contributions so at the end of it how much is he gonna walk away with. I keep having to explain this to my mum when someone comes to do something then when I explain it she then understands.

3. If you floor is out as per one quote saying he's gotta use self levelling compund, can you use these products?? My dad can do almost anything rebuild engines,cars bikes trucks, weld stick and mig,respary cars,has rewired a house(not a sprky by trade) replumbed a whole house(copper not plastic) inc the gas, the registered plumber next door came to give his seal of approval for building regs said it was better than most plumbers he has worked with who have been doing it for years , almost everything he has a go at comes out wicked ,
He had to use self levelling compund mix it himself using instructions on the bag and he just could n't get on with it . luckily it was in a shed so a nice finish wasn't to necessary. I can use it but wasn't around when he needed it doing.

you can mess with it too much if your not carefull too.

Ill give most things ago too like your thinking, but if it goes to sheeeite it's gonna cost.

Spot on. Tiling is easy, anyone can do it. So says some pillock on one of those telly diy programmes.

I used to work as a pattern maker and currently work as an engineer for an aerospace company, so I'm not just you average DIY'er. I have access to all cutting tools and equipment, so what's there to lose, after all it's only "slapping a few tiles down"

Can I ask what you thought it would cost you?

I am a city and guilds carpenter and also a very good tiler....................does that mean I can walk straight into a job as an aerospace engineer, then??!!!
