How to pack out a section of wall to raise background level

Morning all,

On a recent job I went in to re-grout tiles around a bath, only to find water had penertrated the original knackered grout lines so half the tiles had to be removed as they'd become unstuck from the original sand and cement + skim background. I'm going in to re-tile up to a line of the original tiles. But my problem is the remaining tile level I need to match to are in fact two layers of tiles stuck one on the other.

In a nutshell I'm left with mainly sand and cement background (a minute patches of skim) around 1.5 x 0.5m, need to tile on this, but need to some how bring my level up to match the remaining old tiles (two layers of tiles). So what would you guys recommend to a prime (SBR?) and what product to pack out the background prior to tiling?

The level needs to be packed out by about 5-8m prior to applying adhesive to tile.

You could use a backerboard such as Wedi which comes as thin as 4mm. Alternatively, you could use some cheap 6 x 6 whites, even seconds, to pack out the wall. SBR as a primer.

Guy in topps mentioned about the cheap 6x6 tiles as a means to pack out the wall using BAL Grip adhesive. Ironically it's these cheap tiles that will also be the top layer of tiles in the over bath shower area.

As for the Wedi board, how would you attach this to a sand and cement wall?

I wouldnt use tubbed adhesive. I would fix the backerboard or the tiles with a standard set cement based adhesive such as Mapei Adsilex P9, having primed with Mapei Primer G. Its flexible, easy to trowel on/comb out and has a pot life of just about all day. Wediboard would be quicker to fix and probably give you a flatter surface on which to fix the tiles.
