Keeping Grout clean

Post by Hoovie »

Hi,

Read before something about a product that you apply over new grout and it helps keep it fresh and clean but can't remember the name of it

Any ideas?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

A good layer of dust works well.

It's all the cleaning off that causes the problem!

You can get it online here-

I recently purchased some items from this company and was impressed with the results

Wow - That stuff is expensive! I can get a similar product at our big chain home improvement store, Home Depot, for about $4 a bottle. When my contractor saw me using it he thought even that was too much. He suggested I get the silicone sealer in a tube and dilute it with water (which is all I guess the stuff I use is. Its main ingredient is water.) and use a brush to paint it on. My opinion was, too much work. I spent the $4. If it's an area that gets scrubbed a lot, you'll want to reapply every so often and I find it takes a couple coats in the beginning.

Hi Nancy,

have you got a link to the stuff you buy?

Hoovie, This is the product and the main site. I've used a lot of the products in the line and I would recommend them. It looks like they have distribution set up only in the US and Canada, but perhaps you could email them to see it is available over there. I'd imagine if you have to pay shipping, you won't come out ahead. "Tripping over dollars to save a dime".

The picture on the site is a one gallon bottle. What I buy are the little 6oz bottles with the brush top like the one UltimateHandyMan recommended.

But, as you can see, Home Depot does not mail this product out. Perhaps it's considered a Haz Mat that needs special labeling and they don't want to bother.

good luck

thanks for links, Nancy :thumbright: second one didn;t work for me, but I got the info from the first ok.

I reckon you are right - not something that is high enough value to warrant shipping international and would also require special precautions which would make it even more.

Had a look around google to see if the have Uk distributors but doesn't look like it.

My job is based around lifecycle cost estimation, so as you say, I am familiar with the idea that we don't want to be tripping over the bucks to save pennies

I reckon I will be going with the posted one as - to use another American metaphor I like - by searching for alternatives lower then £6, I have to ask myself "Is the view worth the climb"

I'll post back my results using it, so we can get an idea of the difference :thumbright:

Would this idea actually work  I would be surprised if all that happened trying to do this was NOT a big sticky, squigy mess of water and silicone

I use HG grout cleaner all the time.Works very well. Get the HG make, as the other makes in bnq/topp tiles are rubbish.

You use it 2 times a year.

Where would I get the HG stuff from, Hank?
Have you tried the sealer product which is meant to get rid of the need to clean the grout?

Good plan with one MAJOR flaw ....

White tiles with White grouting hides crap tiling a lot better

Which is why I need it to stay white
