Hi all,

I have recently got a new work lap top - HP Mobile Workstation EliteBook 8740w. They installed the latest microsoft etc etc. Well I am not sure what has happened but it now does not want to work?!

Right here goes with the explanation and I will try and attach photos if I can work out how to re-size!

It starts loading and then a page opens X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe

It then goes to Startup Repair - "Startup Repair is checking your system for problems"

It then goes to Startup Repair - "Startup Repair could not detect a problem" - "To restart immediately, click Finish". I click finish and it restarts and goes back to Startup Repair again and checking my computer. It appears to be on a loop

I have tried escape during startup and I go to the page showing
F1 System Information
F2 System Diagnostics
F3 Initiate Intel CIRA
F7 HP SpareKey
F9 Boot Device Option
F10 BIOS Setup
F11 HP Recovery
F12 Network Boot
ENTER - Continue Startup

The only one I have tried is F2 and System Diagnostics but it shows that there are no problems.

I would normally ask our IT man but he is away for a while so was wondering if anyone had any ideas? I have some information on there that I do not want to lose if I can help it. Not sure if it is relevant but someone mentioned it could be because I tried to download Google Earth?!

Its basically lost your boot record.

To run the Bootrec.exe tool, you must start Windows RE. To do this, follow these steps:

Put the Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
Press a key when you are prompted.
Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then clickNext.
Click Repair your computer.
Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
Type Bootrec.exe, and then press ENTER.

Note To start the computer from the Windows Vista or Windows 7 DVD, the computer must be configured to start from the DVD drive. For more information about how to configure the computer to start from the DVD drive, see the documentation that is included with the computer or contact the computer manufacturer.

Sadly the discs are kept 200 miles away with our IT guy (who is away)...

Plus I do not know if it will start the DVD on start up?!

I really hope that I do not lose any stored data....

I think root is saying you boot it from the disc.

If I had the disc I would but it is 200 miles away and will wait for it to get back.

try booting into safe mode

Restart your computer.
When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information start to gently tap the F8 key on your keyboard repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows 7 Advanced Boot Options screen

then select safe mode,

once in safe mode perform a system restore. start->all programs -> accessories -> system tools -> systems restore

To be honest I do not think so, I think it just started happening?! Very frustrating as the last one broke, got a new one and set it up for me and then......

I tried to press F8 in varying degrees of anger but I only got a beeeeeeeeeep? Instead it gives me the option of pressing escape instead. I press escape and I get the following functions F1 etc - all but F8 are shown.

Right, I will try adding photos....

I think I will end up waiting until he gets back.

I keep thinking of IT Crowd and tried to turn it on and off!

try F9 and boot from d/drive??

You need the disc to boot from D drive

Don't suppose you got a copy of ERD Commander lying around?
