Any error messages?

What operating system is installed?

How old is the Notebook? And what make and model?

Does it actually start in 'Safemode with internet connection', and if so can you update your antivirus program and run a full scan?
If so, also update your antispyware program and run a scan with that also.

Notebook is an acer about 15 months old, windows xp, the page that keeps coming up is the one where you continually press f8 when starting,it just goes around in circles no matter what starting option is chosen it come's back to the same page. When you say safemode with internet connection where is that option.

I think he means Safe Mode with networking.

In my experience this usually happens as a result of a faulty hard drive.

If you've got the Windows XP installation CD you could try to repair Windows. Follow the steps here:http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operating ... epair1.htm Pay attention at step 4 as you don't choose the option you'd expect to.

Thanks for that, Richie.

15 months doesn't seem a long time for a hard drive.

As it is, or should be, still under warranty, take it back and see what the retailer thinks.

You can remove the hard drive and connect it to another PC using an adapter like this one http://www.maplin.co.uk/ide-sata-to-usb-2.0-48965 It'll then show up as another drive and you can copy off any data. BTW, there may be cheaper adapters around, it's just the first one I looked at.
