Should I skim or 'No more Ply'?

Hi,

Please see the photo, as you can see I'm removing some lovely green tiles. With most of the tiles thevery thin top level plaster is also coming off.. I plan on putting up tiles again, so should I skim or use something like 6mm no more ply?

I don't think thats a thin layer of plaster more likely to be the adhesive.

You don't say if its bathroom/kitchen near water etc. but i would say if your putting up tiles again then just put them straight up, no need to skim or anything.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, here's some more info to make things easier.

The wall is straight above the bath, for which we intend to use as an over the shower bath.
The adhesive is the cream coloured stripes, the grey is the smooth wall, there's lots of it still there where they tiled where there was paint, that part of the wall stayed there...

Couple of options

It's hard to tell from the picture but is that cement render under the grey plaster? If it is you can tile directly on to that, In fact it's avery good substrate to be tiling to. If it's not render and is a gypsum based undercoat plaster it will need covering.

What you cover it with will depend on the type and weight of tile you intend to use. Different susbstrates such as skim plaster/bare plasterboard/render/tile backer boards all have different weight limits.

Here's a closer look, the deep hole is where the bath was attached to the wall with a bracket.

I have started to read about tile weights and etc... didn't even cross my mind until today. The tiles, per m² are 18kg, without adhesive. Would you think that this is suitable?
