Driving on a main road in the Scottish backwoods today and I met a truck loaded with stone chippings coming from opposite direction on a bend. As he went past me a shower of stones came off the top of his load and showered all over my car as I went past.

Chipped paintwork..
The thoughtless b*****d...........

Watch out for those forestry lorries too. Them things go like the bloody devil, and on single track roads too

Nearly ended in a ditch a while back on account of one.

You should have got the trucks number - it is illegal to have an unsafe load and his insurance should cover any damage to your vehicle. Loose loads must be covered.

There was no way I could get his number. He was in a line of fast moving traffic and it happened on a bend so he was instantly out of sight.

Yes, getting the number is impossible when they're going in the opposite direction. Many years ago I was approaching a breakdown truck going in the opposite direction. Within seconds I saw something blow from the back of the truck and it sailed through the air - almost in slow motion. It smashed into my roof with an almighty clatter. The truck was long gone by the time I realised what had happened. It was a piece of timber board measuring about 6 ft by 4 ft with an orange light on the top. I guess it was something they fixed to the vehicle they were towing. The damage to my car was quite bad. Those 'M' reg Hillman Imps weren't built for that sort of treatment

Me too. I particularly liked the opening back windscreen.

It looked a bit daft with my big magnetically mounted CB aerial on it though...

Breaker, breaker.
In a Hillman Imp    just pictured this tiny car with a 20ft whip ariel flapping like a fishing rod on top of it. Brilliant mate

So why are phones illegal when it used to be OK to hold a radio I wonder?

I'd forgotten about that one TBH. And no breathalyser either. Didn't really matter as cars only started half the time back then anyway ::b

It is STILL ok to hold a radio. The guys on Top Gear do it on camera all the time. Famously there is a guy who used his mobile phone and they tried to prosecute him but since he had a legitimate radio (ham) licence that specifically stated he was allowed to hold portable communications equipment whilst driving they couldn't 'do' him......

What the cops do nowadays though is 'do you' under the catch-all of 'not being in proper control of a vehicle'. The fine isn't as severe as the mobile phone one but they can still 'do you'...... tw@ts.
