Write problem with Samsung Story hard drive

I have a LAN hard drive with two USB sockets allowing me to add another two hard drives to the main Maxtor drive. I have plugged in a number of drives and USB sticks and in the main they work OK. But there does seem to be an issue with power and my 32Gb stick failed and my Clickfree hard drive failed in both cases completely they don't even show as connected.
So as I required more storage I got a Samsung Story hard drive. However when plugged into the Maxtor drive it will only allow me to read and will not permit me to write.
The same drive however plugged into my PC's running XP and Vista works A1 with no problem. I have looked at all the setting I can find and can't find any reason why I should not be able to write to the drive and as it has it's own power supply power so power should not be a problem.
Any ideas? Don't fancy re-formatting and want it to work with Maxtor so I can watch films on the drive with Blu-ray player without PC running. As it is I have to swap it between Maxtor and Computer although only one plug it means if my wife is watching a film I can't switch off the PC.
So any ideas please.
Eric
