When I chose a picture from my photo's in Windows Live Photo Gallery and clicked on it to become my desktop picture that worked o.k. but the problem was that I lost the original desktop picture.Does anyone know how I can avoid this same mistake next time I change the desktop picture. Please do not tell me to click on "My Themes" in Personalize as the pictures I use are not there but in "Photo Gallery".
System is Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 running 64 bit on a Toshiba laptop

You should select the pictures from the Personalize section.
Right click Desktop
Select personalize
Click Desktop background
Select Picture Location and browse to the picture file that you want to use.
The pictures in that file will display on the page.
Tick the ones you want to use, (once you have done that, they will appear in My Themes.)
Then select Picture Position and pick how you want them displaying
Then select how frequently you want them to change
Click Save Changes
Job done.

You can always tell a Yorkshireman,
But you cannot tell him much.

Pleased to be of help.
I hate asking questions on some forums and then getting what appears to me to be a load of gibberish and abbreviations as an answer.
I would sooner go through it step by step even if it is 'teaching granny to suck eggs'.
