D Drive filling up..not sure how/why?

Above says it all really, not a great deal of space left on the D Drive...I can't understand why, machine is only about a year old..

I know I did one full back up to the D Drive..though I'm not sure how to find it...(Numpty here..)

Anyway, I'm wanting to do a full backup to dvd...But as I'm currently using a total of 188Gb over drive C and D..I'd need 41 dvds!!

That can't be right surely???

So, in an attempt to try to resolve this, I've had a look in back up and restore and found this..

Should I just delete the previous back-ups and the "system image"....??

Yes there's no need to keep any more back ups other than your most recent one. Personally I keep about my last 2 or 3 last back ups on a portable drive.

Personally, I would delete the lot on the D Drive and make your system and data backups on an external HD.

Then I would repartition most of the D drive back to C to give you another 140GB of space and about 30GB of space in D, should you need it for anything in the future.

Thanks both...

I have deleted the previous back-ups and removed the shadow copy....and started a new back-up..

Dave. M I think all that "Partitioning" stuff is beyond me... :help:

Do you have Windows 7?

Windows 7 (and even Vista) will do it for you with a few clicks:

I tend to keep all my data (docs, emails, pics etc) on a USB memory schtick (16Gb). Much easier to keep a track of, no HD space and pretty secure.

When you get down to it, the actual DATA you have is relatively small - your HDD fills with 'cr@p' far too easily.

Good point KE...I'm full of Cr@p....

I would buy an external drive..if I could find one at a reasonable price...

However Due to the floods in Thailand HD's are fairly scarce atmo...or so i'm told...

Drives aren't that scarce, the distributors are profiteering out of it and have doubled their prices.

If your D is on the same drive as your C then it's not really a proper backup. Yor drive fails and you could lose the lot.

Just to add another point for ke and wino.

Putting all your stuff in one place, whether it's a USB stick or removable hard drive, is stil all eggs in one basket. It fails you can lose the lot.

Anything important you need at least 2 copies of it. Use USB devices as a backup, not a data store.

Similar thing using win7 I thought maybe a good idea to backup as you do
But my backup drive 120gigs was running out of space? So removed stuff -still the same a week or so later
wanting more and more jeez
So removed all apart from backup -just as well as the h/drive packed up soon after
Windows 7 will warn you which is nice
I installed a 2 Tera Bite drive but can’t be bothered with a standard windows backup as they have never worked for me when I really needed it,
system restore- yes quite handy so now I'm trying out a program called Restore IT :-)
