i'm doing up my ensuite.
I have new shower tray and enclosure, moziac tiles for the inside of the shower and oyster slate 300mm x 150mm for the walls outside of the shower - outside of shower wall sizes are approx 1.5m x 2.5m so there will be quite a bit of weight on them with the slate tiles.
So apparently backer board will give the strength needed to hold heavy slate tiles and water resistance.
The walls are metal frame stud walls - insulated and with existing tiles still in place at the moment, so my plans are.....
remove all the existing tiles, enclosure and tray, plaster board then, aslong as the stud work looks strong/adequate enough, replace with tile backer board.
1st quiery: which backer board to use? I see there are a few different types and thickness. which should i use marmox, aquapanel, 10mm, 20mm?
the slate tiles will need cleaning, enhancing and sealing. should I be doing this before they go on the walls?
then i've read from previous posts fix tiles with mix yourself adhesive as it's stronger - any particular type you'd recommend?

The tiles both off them,.. what colour are they?....

If light in colour,you will need a white flexiable cement based adhesive...

Ardex,weber,bal,mapei....


What size off mosaic?..are they on a mesh,if so you will need to use a 3mm notched trowel...

Seal the slate prior to fixing using Aquamix products(water based so not strong smells etc)....you can fix before but may want to work very clean and use a pre-grout product......

If your set on a cement based backer board,then 12.5mm hardieboards for me,just follow mfr...stagger ect...


For adhesive one off the above,but for fixing mosaic then you will need a mosaic adhesive,slightly costs more but sticks like s h I t tae a blanket and any other tile it will do the job.

the colour - well theyre a bit of everything, the slate is grey yellow brown beige - i'll post a picture. and the mozaic i'm undecided at the moment could be one called petrol which has an indescent look - again i'll post a pic when we decide which colour - think they'll be dark though and glass.

with the sealer and colour enhancer should i fix tiles to wall then clean, enhance and seal before grout?

with the backer board what would you recommend? I understand i'll have to have a backer board that will support the weight of the tiles but not so sure which to go for

Don't know if asked in other reply....are they uncalibrated ..I.e different thicknesses off tiles?

If so sort in correct thickness.....(try and sort them in order off thicknesses and using the thicker ones start with these from the middle and working into corners using the thinner ones..)
