Can anyone recommend a tile adhesive for shower room for slate tiles going onto hardiebacker board. tiles are quite heavy 150mm x 300mm. there's so many different types it's making my head spin!

assuming you do mean for the floor, is it on a wooden floor or a concrete floor?

if upstairs on a wooden floor you need to fit the hardibacker board with flexible rapid set adhesive (SP1) and then screw them down too. then use the same adhesive to lay the tiles on the board. if it's on concrete floor (solid & doesn't flex) then you simply use Rapid set.

it looks like you will have new studding & plasterboard in the room by your picture. don't make the mistake of tiling straight onto the boards. a lot of people fail to tank coat the plasterboard. this will seal it and make it water tight. for the sake of about £50 you will get a tanking kit with the primer and tanking coat plus the rubber edging. once you do this use the powder adhesive not the tubbed as this adheres better and holds a heavier tile.

It's for walls. As I understand it I need the Hardiebacker board to take the weight of the tiles which are slate 150mm x 300m also it's in a bathroom/ensuite not going to be a wet room so do I need to tank? wasn't planning on tanking thought the hardiebacker would do the job.
Anyway the Hardiebacker will be going onto metal stud walls - is the advice the same to use flexable rapid set?
In terms of adhesive....what is "open time" does that mean it doesn't set for a longer period of time? As in Ardex X77.

No need to tank the hardie boards,just stagger them and fill the joints with fiba tape and adhesive..

Ardex 32.....stone adhesive is what you will want for them babies mate,are they uncalibrated?

Anyway the 32 will do the job for you....

If you want to keep the natural look of the tiles,then Aquamix sealers gold....get this on flea bay..

I've already bought BAL flexible rapidset white, will it do or is it a no go?

I have taken off some of the tiles and plasterboard which had polestyrene on the back of it, should I be insulating this with something (rockwool?) before putting up the hardibacker?

That adhesive will be fine...

The brick wall..is it a single skin wall?...if so you will need a vapour barrier up first then insulation/boards/tiles ect...

When fixing just take your time and small areas at a time,you will probably want to seal tiles prior to fixing them.

not sure how many courses of bricks there are but it's the wall between us and the neighbours. how will i be able to know if single or double skin?
what is a vapour barrier and will rockwool do ok for insulation or should i be getting something else.
i've cleaned the tiles using lithofin power clean and they look really good. see pic attached.

I would put a vapour barrier up mate just to cover yourself....

A vapour barrier is a plastic sheating you would put up this helps to stop moisture,..when hot and cold air meet...and it won't dampen any insulation you put up...


Just google vapour barrier and have a look...

Re:insulation ...rock wool,celotex kingspan ect....really depends on the depth you have but anyone will do...

Tiles look a treat,don't forget to give them sealer/enhancer after grouting them..
